Xavier Scruggs has announced his retirement from baseball.
Scruggs saw some limited action with the Cardinals and Marlins from 2014-16 before playing in Korea and Mexico the last few years. It’s not clear what Scruggs’ next plans are, but he’s done some radio work so it’s possible he’ll stay in the game in that capacity.

  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs plans to hold an open workout for scouts at the University of Tampa on Wednesday afternoon.
The 31-year-old is attempting to make a return to the big leagues after spending the last two seasons in Korea. He had a monster season in 2017, slashing .300/.402/.595 with 35 homers and 111 RBI in 115 games. He should generate enough interest to at least get a minor league deal with a spring training invite someplace.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs is talking to MLB teams at this week’s Winter Meetings in Las Vegas.
Scruggs, 31, has spent the past two seasons with the NC Dinos the Korea Baseball Organization. He’s put up a .277/.373/.535 batting line with 61 homers in that time, though he saw better results in 2017. It’s very unlikely he’d get a major league deal, but it’s reasonable to think he could get a spring training invite somewhere. Scruggs appeared in 50 games between the Cardinals and Marlins between 2014-2016 while hitting .227 with one home run.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs will be recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.
He’ll join the team for Friday’s series opener in Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old has had a productive year in the minors, hitting .290 with 21 HR, 50 RBI and four steals across 93 games. Scruggs has made 26 career big league appearances. All of those came with his former team, the Cardinals.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Marlins purchased the contract of INF/OF Xavier Scruggs from Triple-A New Orleans.
The Marlins have been starved for offense from their first baseman since Justin Bour (ankle) went down, so they’ll give Scruggs a shot The 28-year-old has batted .290 with 21 homers for New Orleans this season. He’s at first base and batting sixth Friday against the Pirates.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs hit a two-run home run, the first of his MLB career, in Saturday’s win over the Pirates.
Scruggs finished 1-for-3 in the game, with the two-run bomb coming off Pirates starter Chad Kuhl in the fourth inning. It ended up being the game-winning run. The homer was his first in 28 MLB games spanning three seasons; this year is his first as a member of the Marlins after starting his career in the Cardinals organization. Scruggs will likely continue to draw starts at first base while Justin Bour is out but isn’t a fantasy commodity.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk Monday against the Mets.
His double gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Mets tied things up in the bottom of the frame and eventually won the game in extras. The 27-year-old Scruggs is 9-for-26 (.346) with one homer and two doubles through 10 games since his call-up from Triple-A New Orleans earlier this month. He should continue to get chances at first base with Justin Bour sidelined, but those in mixed fantasy leagues have better options.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs went 2-for-2 with an RBI double in Sunday’s loss to the Padres.
Scruggs picked up his first double of the season in the second inning, driving in a run in the process. He was called up on August 19 due to a strong power showing at Triple-A New Orleans. Since that promotion, the 28-year-old first baseman has managed seven hits in 23 at-bats. While he did bop 21 homers with New Orleans prior to his call-up, he has yet to show any sort of fantasy upside at the major league level.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Xavier Scruggs has elected free agency.
Scruggs was taken off the Marlins’ 40-man roster earlier this month and has opted to look for a job elsewhere. He got a cup of coffee with the big club this season, batting just .210/.290/.306 with one homer in 69 plate appearances.
  • INT 1st Baseman #53
Marlins sent 1B Xavier Scruggs outright to Triple-A New Orleans.
The move clears him off the 40-man roster. Scruggs, 29, appeared in 24 games with the Marlins this season and batted .210/.290/.306 with one homer in 69 plate appearances.
