Cease was at 106 pitches after seven, but he clearly wanted to continue, and after a nine-pitch eighth, he was allowed to start the ninth. He wound up throwing just three pitches then, the last of which was a clean single from Heliot Ramos. Tyler Walker replaced him and preserved the shutout against his former club. Cease, who pitched a no-hitter for the Padres in 2024, struck out 11 and walked three. He has six 10-strikeout games this season and 31 for his career. The first-time All-Star closes out the first half 6-4 with a 2.56 ERA. He’s second in the majors with 148 strikeouts and seventh in ERA.
  • KC 2nd Baseman #2
Yeah, Tyler Tolbert. He went 2-for-2 before being lifted from Saturday’s game, didn’t play Sunday, went 5-for-5 with a homer and a double (his first two extra-base hits of the season) on Monday and started off 5-for-5 with another homer and three infield singles tonight. Just the homers in back-to-back games is surprising enough from Tolbert. He was without a homer in his previous 49 games between Triple-A and the majors this season. He had four in 129 minor league games in 2024 and four in 93 games between Triple-A and the majors last season. Before going 2-for-2 on Saturday, he was hitting .200 in 35 major league at-bats this season. He’s now at .396. He also has 10 steals after getting one tonight. Tolbert probably won’t keep hitting, but he is an elite basestealer and the Royals figure to give him regular playing time for at least a little while after this surge. Those needing steals could do worse.
  • PIT Right Fielder #29
It’s the eighth three-homer game this year and first by a Pirate since Liover Peguero, of all people, had one at Coors Field last August. The last Pirate to hit three homers at PNC Park wasn’t any more famous; Michael Pérez did that in 2022. O’Hearn is the first Pirate ever to drive in 10 runs in a game. Johnny Rizzo held the team record with nine in a game in 1939. Jason Bay drove in eight for the team twice, and Andrew McCutchen did it once. It’s the second 10-RBI game of the decade, joining Shohei Ohtani’s 6-for-6, three-homer masterpiece on Sept. 19, 2024. O’Hearn is suddenly ninth in the majors with 61 RBI, even though he spent two weeks on the IL in May.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #61
It’s hard not to wonder how much differently things would have gone if Trea Turner hadn’t botched an easy double play relay that would have resulted in Sánchez throwing 15 pitches in a scoreless first inning. He went on to give up six runs and throw 31 pitches in the frame. Still, as unfortunate as that was, it seemed pretty clear that Sánchez just didn’t have it today. He gave up three homers on his changeup, which is just nuts. It matches the number of homers he’d yielded on his previous 1,753 changeups since the beginning of 2025. Sánchez failed to last five innings for the first time since May 24, 2025 and gave up more than six runs for the first time since Aug. 2024. He’d never before surrendered three homers. The performance took his ERA from 2.00 to 2.62, dropping him from second to 10th on the MLB leaderboard. Sánchez is expected to make his next start Saturday against the Tigers.
  • ATL Right Fielder #13
The two-homer, two-steal game is a first for Acuña and just the 23rd time it’s happened in major league history. Juan Soto on Aug. 30 and Mickey Moniak on Sept. 7 both did it last year, and Shohei Ohtani accomplished it in his absurd 6-for-6, three-homer, 10-RBI game on Sept. 19, 2024. Chipper Jones in 1999, Rafael Furcal in 2005 and Ender Inciarte in 2017 were the previous Braves to pull off the feat. Acuña has homered in three straight games and is up to .246/.369/.419 on the season.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #17
Let’s start with the bad news. Jones served up a solo homer to Kody Clemens and a two-run blast to Trevor Larnach a couple frames later, with both long balls coming against his fastball. Not great. There were some positive takeaways for the dynamic 24-year-old as he averaged 99 mph on his fastball and topped out at 101.5 mph in his first major-league start since September 27, 2024. He finished with six strikeouts and only handed out two free passes. Jones remains a work in progress after missing last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, but his talent and strikeout upside are undeniable, which makes him worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy leagues. He’ll make his next start against the Astros at Daikin Park on Thursday.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #45
Now this is Gerrit Cole. He was utterly dominant facing just three batters over the minimum and forcing 15 swings-and-misses. He got some help from his defense too when Aaron Judge threw a strike to nail Michael Massey at home plate. After that, just one more Royal reached scoring position as the righties had fits trying to put a bat on Cole’s slider and lefties the same with his changeup. It was all held up by his fastball that consistently sat around 97 mph and Cole was able to spot it wherever he wanted. This looked like one of the best pitchers in the league, as Cole has been for the better part of the last decade. Keep an eye on his workload, as he hasn’t gone above 80 pitches yet in two starts off the injured list. He’s scheduled to face the Guardians next time out.
  • CHC Left Fielder #8
Happ got the Cubs going in this one with a two-run single in the first inning that instantly put Pirates’ starter Bubba Chandler on the ropes. Then, his three-run homer in the seventh gave them a lead and set up what turned into a six-run inning. This was the most RBI that Happ has had in a single game since July 4th, 2024 and brought his season total from 21 to 26 in one fell swoop. That’s the kind of heroics the Cubs needed to finally break their 10-game losing streak.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher
Jump will make his major-league debut on Tuesday against the division-rival Mariners with veteran Luis Severino being pushed back an extra day. The 23-year-old southpaw, who was selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of LSU, has compiled a solid 4.50 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 56/20 K/BB ratio across 38 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season. He attacks hitters with an unorthodox delivery and a repertoire that features a mid-90s fastball, a strong curveball and multiple slider variations. Jump projects as more of a mid-rotation starter long term, but he misses enough bats to warrant immediate interest in deeper mixed leagues.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher
Jump, the 73rd overall pick in the 2024 draft, will presumably go right into the rotation. He had a 4.50 ERA in nine starts in Triple-A, but he had struck out 56 while also walking 20 in 38 innings. It seems unlikely that he’ll be a mixed-league solution right away in a tough situation for pitchers in Sacramento, but he has a chance to be a No. 2 or 3 starter for the A’s in the long run.
