Poreda

Poreda was a first-round pick of the White Sox in 2007 and made a pretty quick rise up to the big leagues, but he hasn’t been in the majors since 2009 and last season made just three starts at the Double-A level. He’s still just 26, so there’s time to turn it around.

It’s been an interesting journey for Poreda. The former first-round pick hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2009 and has been limited to 20 minor league innings over the last two-plus seasons due to Tommy John surgery. He’s reportedly throwing hard again, but control has always been his issue.

Poreda was just called back up from the minors Wednesday and allowed two hits over one-third of an inning against the Orioles. He figures to get another shot before long.

Poreda had a decent 3.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings out of the Rangers’ bullpen earlier this season. The 27-year-old left-hander will pitch in middle relief.

Poreda is a big left-hander capable of throwing 95 mph. He lacks quality secondary stuff at the moment, but he has more upside than Lance Broadway or Kyle McCulloch, the college pitchers the White Sox took in the first round the previous two years.

After determining that Poreda wasn’t ready for the majors this spring, the White Sox chose to send the left-hander back to Double-A rather than challenge him with International League hitters. He has a 1.69 ERA and a 17/9 K/BB ratio in 16 innings.

Poreda was given a long look, but he didn’t deserve a job after giving up nine runs and posting a 7/7 K/BB ratio in 13 innings. Beckham greatly impressed, hitting .270/.325/.568. The White Sox are planning on leaving him at shortstop for now, and he’ll be a regular there in Double-A. The demotions of Russell and Wassermann suggest that Mike MacDougal has a legitimate shot to reclaim a spot in the White Sox pen. Also, Jack Egbert is still hanging around.
