Triggs was outrighted off the 40-man roster before deciding to test the open market. The 31-year-old allowed seven runs over 8 1/3 innings with Boston this season.

Triggs had been on the shelf since September 15 due to radial nerve irritation in his arm. He’ll probably make an appearances out of the bullpen over the final two days of the season. The 31-year-old owns a disappointing 8.59 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 7/6 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 innings on the season.

The radial nerve runs through the posterior portion of the upper limb, and this issue will probably end Triggs’ season. He had posted an 8.59 ERA in 7 1/3 innings between San Francisco and Boston.

Triggs got the start, and the only run allowed was a solo homer to Caleb Joseph. The pitching-desperate Red Sox have had the 31-year-old go three innings in his last two appearances, and this was a much more effective outing than the three-run outing he had against the Braves on Tuesday. Still, there’s very little fantasy value in this type of hurler. If Triggs starts again, it’s against the Rays or Marlins.

Triggs was claimed off waivers last month. He hasn’t seen significant time in the majors since 2018.

Triggs was designated for assignment by San Francisco last week after getting lit up in his lone relief appearance so far in 2020. He could join the Red Sox pitching staff once he passes through intake testing.

They needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Trevor Cahill. Triggs was knocked around in his lone appearance with the big club.

Triggs recorded only one out while yielding three earned runs during his short stay on the Giants’ active roster. Andrew Suarez has been called up in a corresponding move.

Jandel Gustave was designated for assignment to clear 40-man roster space. Triggs will be making his first appearance in the majors since 2018.

Triggs underwent thoracic outlet surgery last fall and has missed most of this season with a hip injury. It’s not clear whether the Giants intend to use him as a starter or reliever.
