DT Anthony Adams could be utilized in goal-line situations as a fullback this season.
Adams’ 6-3/300-pound frame could be used to open holes for Kevan Barlow or Frank Gore.
  • FA Defensive Lineman
    Bears released DT Anthony Adams.
The move clears $1.9 million in salary. Adams, a veteran nose tackle who will turn 32 before the season, fell out of the Bears’ rotation last year, appearing in 11 games but only two of the final six. He had 16 tackles and no sacks. Adams was once one of the more underrated run-stopping 4-3 defensive tackles in football, but his career may be through after nine NFL seasons.
  • FA Defensive Lineman #75
Matt Toeaina will be the Bears’ starting nose tackle for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.
It looks like Toeaina has done enough to surpass Anthony Adams on the depth chart. Toeaina was a force in Chicago’s front four rotation early last season, but wore down in the latter weeks. Now with a full season under his belt, Toeaina will look to get consistent output on a weekly basis.
  • FA Defensive Lineman #75
Bears DT Matt Toeaina is expected to miss “a couple of weeks” after an MRI revealed a sprained PCL in his knee.
The Bears’ starting nose tackle, Toeania will be replaced by Anthony Adams next to “three-technique” Henry Melton. Adams is better against the run, anyway, so we wouldn’t expect a noticeable difference on Chicago’s interior.
  • FA Defensive Lineman
Former Bears DT Anthony Adams has retired from football.
Adams was a second-round pick of the 49ers, and played four seasons with San Francisco. He spent his final five seasons with the Bears. Adams was solid run-stopper earlier in his career, and he started every game for Chicago in 2010. Despite re-signing with the team in 2011, Adams fell out of favor with the emergence of Henry Melton and Stephen Paea.
  • CHI Defensive Lineman
Bears NT Dusty Dvoracek suffered a sprained knee in Sunday’s loss.
Dvoracek’s backup is Anthony Adams, although Darwin Walker is a superior player and would likely start next to Tommie Harris if Dusty misses action.
  • FA Defensive Lineman
NFL suspended Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson eight games without pay for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
The suspension can be reduced to six games if Johnson complies with all pending court requirements and avoids run-ins with the law before October 1. He won’t be able to participate in OTAs but can attend the Bears’ practice facility. Dusty Dvoracek is the lead candidate to take Johnson’s place next to Tommie Harris, though Anthony Adams and Antonio Garay are in the mix.
  • CHI Defensive Lineman
Dusty Dvoracek, a first-day draft pick last year who sat out the season with an injury, will get the first crack at the starting tackle position vacated by Tank Johnson.
He’ll compete with Anthony Adams and Antonio Garay for time at the position. Dvoracek was labeled a high-motor nose tackle coming out of Oklahoma.
  • FA Defensive Lineman
Bears placed DTs Antonio Garay (fractured leg) and Anthony Adams (elbow) on injured reserve, ending their seasons. Garay will undergo surgery.
Chicago is now thinner than its been on the interior defensive line all year, which is saying something. Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor should benefit in Week 15. Garay signed an undisclosed deal in September and will likely battle for a roster spot in 2008, while Adams will certainly return.
  • DET Defensive Back
Bears CB Nathan Vasher will miss Thursday’s game against Detroit.
It will be the tenth game Vasher has missed. Chicago will also be without DT Anthony Adams, who suffered and elbow injury in Week 13. The Bears’ defense has looked like a shell of its former self, and Adams’ injury only improves an already favorable match-up for the Redskins’ offense.
