Undrafted rookie Asa Watson was the Patriots’ starting tight end in Thursday’s preseason opener.
With Rob Gronkowski (knee) still rehabbing, Watson got the nod over veterans Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams. Watson was not targeted in the passing game. Despite the “start,” the North Carolina State product is still far from assured of a spot on the 53-man roster. Slowed by a minor heart condition, Watson caught only 28 passes in four seasons for the Wolfpack.
