Undrafted rookie Asa Watson was the Patriots’ starting tight end in Thursday’s preseason opener.
With Rob Gronkowski (knee) still rehabbing, Watson got the nod over veterans Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams. Watson was not targeted in the passing game. Despite the “start,” the North Carolina State product is still far from assured of a spot on the 53-man roster. Slowed by a minor heart condition, Watson caught only 28 passes in four seasons for the Wolfpack.
  • FA Tight End #45
    Patriots waived TE Asa Watson.
The UDFA from NC State started Thursday night’s preseason opener. He played 28 offensive snaps, but wasn’t targeted in the passing game and received poor marks from Pro Football Focus for his run blocking. The Patriots are searching for the right combination behind Rob Gronkowski.
  • FA Tight End #45
Cowboys signed TE Asa Watson, formerly of the Patriots.
Watson is an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina State. He’ll be a long shot to make the roster in Dallas, where the club has a deep tight end corps.
