Just like that, with a birdie on 18 at TPC Craig Ranch, Jason Day picked up his first PGA Tour win in over five years. With the conclusion of the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, the golf world focuses on the 2023 PGA Championship. It’s crazy that we are already at the season’s second major tournament. This year the PGA Championship is played at the iconic Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. Defending champion Justin Thomas is back in the field with odds at +2400. It hasn’t been the year that Thomas expected, with just one top-five finish to start the season. Yet, as proven by Phil Mickelson winning the 2021 PGA Championship, it’s hard to count out a past major champion this week.
The honor of being the odds-on favorite for the PGA Championship goes to Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler. FanDuel Sportsbook has the two listed at +750. There’s no denying the fact that these two golfers deserve to be this week’s favorite. Rahm already has four wins on the Tour this season. Statistically speaking, Rahm is more likely to win a golf tournament than he is to miss the cut. Scheffler’s season has been tremendous as well. He has two wins and eight top-10 finishes. It’s hard to imagine there’s a better bet to make than betting on either of these two to win this week.
There were a couple of golfers whose odds caught my attention. Patrick Cantlay at +2100 was the first. He’s a bent grass specialist who is just a few putts away from having a win on the season. Now with Joe LaCava on the bag, I expect Cantlay to enter this major more confidently. Another price that stood out was Keegan Bradley at +9000. He’s certainly a long shot, but he’s a past PGA Championship winner (2011) who should be a crowd favorite in Rochester. With narrow fairways and thick penal rough, Oak Hill will demand excellence off the tee. Bradley is one of the best off the tee and should have the advantage over others priced similarly to him.
