Gerrit Cole O/U 9.5 Strikeouts vs. Tigers
Gerrit Cole is making history with the New York Yankees, and today, he has a favorable opportunity to keep the good times rolling.
The star ace has recorded a franchise record of at least seven strikeouts in each of his previous 14 regular-season starts.
Cole also has 50 strikeouts through his first five starts of the 2021 season. That is the most by any Yankees pitcher in his first five starts of a season, surpassing Masahiro Tanaka (46 strikeouts in 2014) and Bob Turley (46 strikeouts in 1955) per NJ.com.
That is tied fourth all-time with Corey Kluber (Indians), who is now Cole’s teammate. Cole has the chance to surpass Kluber’s mark and tie Pedro Martinez (Red Sox) and Nolan Ryan (Rangers) for second all-time. The all-time record is 19 by Shane Bieber (19).
Bieber’s mark is still present, so he and Cole are in a race with each other, Bieber with a five-game lead.
The Tigers are hitting .142 in 57 at-bats versus Cole. The nine collective hitters have struck out 22 times to Cole compared to 10 hits, six walks and five RBIs. Cole last pitched against Detroit on Aug 22, 2019, and recorded 12 strikeouts in 7.0 innings and no earned runs. [[ad:athena]]
Detroit has struggled lately. The Tigers struck out nine times to Dylan Cease and allowed Carlos Rodon to post a career-high 12 Ks . That is just the previous two games.
The last six of seven pitchers have recorded at least seven strikeouts against the Tigers, starting with the series versus the Royals. Three-of-four pitchers had seven Ks for Kansas City and all three for the Chicago White Sox.
Chances are, Cole holds Detroit to one run or fewer and goes 7.0-plus innings strong. NBC’s model projects Cole at 8.9 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

As a team, the Tigers are hitting a league-worst .202 and second in strikeouts (262). In OBP (30th), OPS (30th) and SLG (29th), they are bottom-two. Detroit has lost seven of its previous eight games entering this matchup and has failed to score three or more runs in all eight.
If Cole goes seven innings, chances are he goes double-digit strikeouts too. Cole has went Over 9.5 strikeouts in three-of-five starts this season. He has also went Over 9.5 in his last three starts going seven innings.
