The NHL season is rolling along and through three weeks, there’s been no shortage of exciting action. We’ve got two undefeated teams, two winless teams and the entire league clashing in the middle. As we all know, a full 82-game season is in store this year, and that means the most NHL betting action we’ve had since prior to the shortened season is at our fingertips.

We’re happy to offer the tools to help make smart bets that offer exceptional winning opportunities throughout the entirety of the 2021-22 NHL season. Take advantage of our exclusive features which can assist you in locating value on the board, and consult our tools before you lock in any of your wagers with cutting-edge analytics and information. From our edge finder to top trends, key numbers to player props projections, we’re confident these are the sharpest NHL betting tools we’ve ever produced.

Today, we’re taking a look at how to utilize key numbers when creating your betting strategy for the matchups that interest you.

What are Key Numbers?

Key numbers represent the most common score difference (Margin of Victory) or score total (Total Points Scored) between two teams at the end of a game. When considering the spread or over/under, bettors should avoid key numbers because they provide no edge on either side. Instead, it is often beneficial to bet a value that is half-a-point above or below a key number. Then, in the likely event that the final margin or total is a key number, there cannot be a push.

The Key Numbers tool allows users to discover the most common margins and totals for a variety of tailored game scenarios by selecting the desired filters. In addition to identifying the key numbers, the tool demonstrates the edge provided by shopping and/or buying points to avoid the key numbers.

With three games on tonight’s slate, we’re going to take a look at the key numbers in two of the matchups:

Tampa Bay Lightning (-1.5) vs. Washington Capitals

Chicago Blackhawks (-1.5) vs. Ottawa Senators

Looking at data from the past two seasons, you can see that the Capitals and Lightning see 63% of all their games end by a margin of two goals or more. With tonight’s spread set at 1.5, you can have more confidence in betting on Tampa to cover the spread if you believe they’ll win outright, for example.
