The 33-year-old was 6-for-31 this season for Arizona while batting .262/.315/.579 over 96 at-bats in Triple-A. Holaday has been rendered expendable now that Carson Kelly and Daulton Varsho are healthy and he has not started a game since August 19.

Holaday, 33, is added to the roster after Zac Gallen was placed on the injured list on Saturday. The backstop has performed well in Triple-A with an OPS of .894 in 108 plate appearances, but isn’t going to get enough playing time -- and hasn’t hit well enough in the majors -- to justify a fantasy acquisition.

The 33-year-old backstop had been in camp as a non-roster invitee but was released on Friday. He’ll continue to serve as organizational catching depth for the Diamondbacks and can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Holaday inked a minor-league deal with the Diamondbacks during the offseason. He’ll likely latch on as an organizational depth backstop insurance option with another franchise at some point this spring.

Holaday spent last year with the Orioles, and hit just .161 with a .406 OPS in 33 plate appearances for Baltimore last summer. He’ll be injury insurance for the Diamondbacks in 2021.

Severino has been sidelined since his early departure from Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox due to right hip flexor tightness. Bryan Holaday will catch and bat ninth Wednesday versus the Rays.

Severino appeared to tweak something on a single in the seventh inning and was replaced in the lineup by Bryan Holaday. Severino will be reevaluated by the Orioles’ medical staff on Monday.

Holaday contributed a run-scoring single during the fifth inning on Sunday, then tacked on another RBI knock in the sixth inning on Friday -- which would be the only run scored after game resumed in the sixth inning. The veteran backstop is off to a terrific start in his limited time, hitting .429 (3-for-7) with three RBI.

The 32-year-old backstop was signed to a minor league deal in January. He’s taking the roster spot that was opened up on Friday when Richard Bleier was traded to the Marlins. He’ll provide depth behind the plate for the time being, though it’s unlikely that he’ll stick around once the 30-man roster needs to be trimmed down.
