Mitchell made a pair of big-league appearances last year with the Marlins after spending the majority of the season at the Triple-A level between Miami and Philadelphia. The 30-year-old righty will function as organizational pitching depth this season.

Mitchell inked a minor-league deal with the Marlins in late July and wound up making a pair of relief appearance in late August before being designated for assignment. The 30-year-old righty spent the remainder of the year at Triple-A Jacksonville and has opted to search for a new home on the free agent market this offseason.

The 30-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment earlier in the week but passed through waivers unclaimed. He’ll continue to provide minor league rotation depth for the Marlins.

Miami needed to create room after promoting top prospect Edward Cabrera on Wednesday and Mitchell was the odd man out. The 30-year-old carries a 5.13 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 40 1/3 innings this season in the minor leagues.

Mitchell was signed to a minor league deal back in July after being released by the Phillies earlier in the summer. The 30-year-old will have a chance to make his first appearance in the majors since 2018 when he was a part of the San Diego rotation.

Mitchell, 30, hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2018 campaign when he made 16 appearances (11 starts) with the Padres. He posted an uninspiring 6.04 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 20/16 K/BB ratio across 28 1/3 innings (20 appearances) with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being released by the Phillies earlier this summer. He’ll give the Marlins some organizational relief depth over the final two months.

Mitchell spent last season at the alternate site for the White Sox, but he’s previously pitched for the Padres and Yankees. There’s a connection here with Joe Girardi from his time in New York, so it makes sense that he found a home here. The 29-year-old will offer some bullpen depth for Philly.

Adalberto Mejia has also been released, and the White Sox have added Kodi Medeiros and Danny Dopico to their 60-man player pool. Mitchell, 29, owns a career 5.15 ERA in the major leagues.

Mitchell spent the majority of the 2019 season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Padres in El Paso, where he posted a ghastly 9.41 ERA over 44 innings. The 28-year-old will be a minor league arm for the White Sox.

Mitchell cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization. It’s unclear whether the plan is to use him as a starter or reliever at El Paso.
