Christian Villanueva has agreed to a deal with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan.
Villanueva spent the entire 2019 season in Nippon Professional Baseball and batted .218/.322/.378 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI in 113 games for the Yomiuri Giants. This frees up Villanueva to join the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, who bought his contract from the Padres. Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic report that the Padres are selling Christian Villanueva to the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.
Villanueva got off to a tremendous start in 2018, but he batted just .232/.292/.351 between June 1 and his final regular-season game on August 21. The early shutdown was due to a fractured right middle finger. San Diego will search for a more reliable third baseman on the free agent and trade markets this winter.
