AFCA TO REVIEW ASSOCIATION WITH BCS

Earlier today, a U.S. Representative announced that he was prepared to launch hearings aimed directly at the Bowl Championship Series and its fairness. Now, one of the components that makes up the BcS is set to review its role in the process which currently determines a national champion.According to the USA Today, the American Football Coaches Association -- whose 61 voters are part of the USA Today‘s coach’s poll, which is one of the three elements that make up the BcS -- will undertake a study as to the association’s place within the current system. While AFCA executive director Grant Teaff is seemingly against sweeping changes by his group, he did tell the paper that the review would include such areas as the number of voters, making the final vote public as it does now and, yes, whether or not the poll should even remain as part of the BcS.The latter seems extremely unlikely, however. Even as Teaff admitted that the AFCA pulling out of the process was a possibility, he said doing so would probably not be a prudent course to take."(It) doesn’t make a lot of sense when you sit down and analyze it. Why would you cut off your nose to spite your face?” Teaff told the paper. “Don’t read anything into the fact that we are going to look at every aspect of it to try to make it better. That’s not a negative. That’s a positive. While the harsh light of scrutiny on a broken system is certainly welcome, do not underestimate the power of the system and the forces behind it.These latest developments are a good starting point, but there is a long way to go before the BcS is finally and rightfully put in the rearview mirror.
