Heading into summer camp, Virginia Tech has suddenly found itself a little thinner at the wide receiver position.
A Tech spokesperson confirmed to the media that sophomore Kevin Asante will not be on the Hokies football team this season. No reason was given for the parting of ways, nor was there any indication as to whether the receiver will or won’t return next year.
While Asante had just two catches for 18 yards last season, he exited spring as the No. 2 player at one of the wide receiver positions. The Newport News Daily Press wrote that "[a]mong receivers, he had the best 40-yard dash time in the offseason with a time of 4.36 seconds.”
Asante was a two-star member of the Hokies’ 2011 recruiting class. After redshirting as a true freshman, he played in 10 games in 2012.
