Baylor looking to build on-campus stadium

Baylor athletics is looking into building an on-campus, riverfront stadium to replace Floyd Casey Stadium, which is currently a few miles west of the campus, the school’s site said today.

“Due to the strong interest expressed by Baylor Nation for an on-campus football facility, we have decided to share a rendering of the stadium,” Director of Athletics Ian McCaw said of the architectural drawing done by Populous, a worldwide leader in sports stadium architecture that has been engaged to develop the stadium’s master plan.”

Baylor is currently the only Big 12 school who doesn’t have their stadium directly on campus and the new stadium plans to be located directly across the Brazos river from the campus and right next to Interstate 35.

The school is exploring fan support and feasibility in a study that is expected to be completed next month. Baylor football has made strides under coach Art Briles, but the program has had inconsistencies with fan attendance even in their more recent successful seasons. It will be interesting to see if the students and alumni would support the project financially, but there’s no denying what upgraded facilities can do to the exposure of a program and a school.

“This location will maximize the stadium’s exposure,” Baylor AD Ian McCaw said, “given the more than 100,000 vehicles that travel the highway each day, while providing Baylor with an extraordinary branding opportunity.”
