Bayou Bucket renewed as Houston, Rice schedule future series

It’s a slow news day, so what the hell.

While it’s not exactly Texas-Texas A&M, a pair of rival schools from the state of Texas have agreed to get together again in the future, with Houston and Rice announcing a home-and-home series a little further down the road. The Bayou Bucket, as the series between the crosstown rivals is known, will resume Sept. 30, 2017, at TDECU Stadium (home of the Cougars), with the Owls hosting at Rice Stadium Sept. 1, 2018.

The two football programs have met 40 times previously, with the first coming in 1971 and the last in 2013. The four-year gap in the rivalry (2013-17) will match the longest in series history (1995-99).

“I know fans of both schools are excited to see this great series resume,” Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard said in a statement. “The Bayou Bucket is a great tradition and I know our players look forward to the opportunity to bring it back to South Main.”

UH, incidentally, leads the all-time series 29-11.
