Chow time winding down at UCLA

And Utah, you’re nearly officially on the clock.

Last week at this time, it was reported that UCLA had hired former San Francisco 49ers assistant Mike Johnson, ostensibly to replace Norm Chow as the Bruins’ offensive coordinator. While there’s been little movement since, it appears that the Chow watch is back on.

Citing a person inside the football program, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Johnson has reached an agreement in principle to become an assistant coach at UCLA. The Times writes that Johnson’s duties have yet to be defined, but with Chow’s status unclear, he could take over the offensive coordinator spot.

Chow signed a two-year contract extension last year, but head coach Rick Neuheisel has steadfastly refused to state that Chow would return to his staff in 2011.

If Chow is indeed gone -- and with each passing day that’s looking like a matter of when and not if -- one potential landing spot could very well be with the Utes. CFT confirmed last week that Chow and/or his people have spoken to Utah about becoming an assistant on Kyle Whittingham‘s staff.
