Clemson’s Shaq Lawson declares himself ‘ready for next level’

Not surprisingly, one of the top defensive linemen in college football is leaving eligibility on the table to ply his wares at the next level.

In Houston as a finalist for the Lombardi, and labeling it “a tough decision,” Clemson’s Shaq Lawson confirmed to FOX 26‘s Mark Berman that he will be declaring for the April NFL draft. The defensive end said he came to the decision after mulling it over with those close to him.

“I sat down with my family, sat down with the support staff at Clemson,” Lawson told Berman. “I enjoyed being at Clemson, but it’s time. I’m ready for the next level. ...

“That was my goal throughout the season, is to possibly get drafted. I worked hard for (this). I feel like it paid off.”

Lawson currently leads the country in tackles for loss with 22.5, three ahead of the five players at No. 2. His .73 sacks per game are fifth in the ACC.

Entering this season, Lawson had started just one game for the Tigers.
