Texas Tech may very well be without the services of wide receiver Austin Zouzalik for their season opener against SMU Sept. 5 due to a non-football injury.
The sophomore underwent an emergency appendectomy Thursday morning and, as a result, will miss the next 2-4 weeks.
Zouzalik was fifth on the Red Raiders in 2009 with 469 receiving yards, but also averaged 9.6 yards on 21 punt returns. It’s the special teams arena that has seemed to cause head coach Tommy Tuberville the most concern.
“That’s a crucial position,” Tuberville said, “so we want to make sure whoever’s back there, we can get control of it.”
With a little over three weeks until the opener, it remains to be seen whether or not Zouzalik will be on hand to help control the are of Tuberville’s concern.
