Those who have been following me for a while are probably aware of my stance when it comes to goal line cameras in football. We need more of them, especially in big games. If we’re not going to use chip technology, then use as many goal line camera angles as you can possibly get. In this day and age with the technology available, there is simply no excuse for the lack of goal line technology to help make the correct ruling in a football game.
ESPN will be experimenting with a new pylon camera for tonight’s College Football Playoff national championship game between Ohio State and Oregon. It is just the second time this technology has been used, with the first coming this weekend in Frisco, Texas for the FCS national championship game. The sight line for these cameras may be pretty limited in a sense, and there may be nothing new that can be captured here that could not be captured using a regular sideline camera, but the fact this camera will be precisely on the goal line could come into play at any given time.
We may be crossing our fingers though that we do not have to rely on the technology, but it will be comforting to know it is there (if it works).
