Gary Pinkel confirms James Franklin is Mizzou’s starting QB exiting spring

Given his experience and performance (relative to other quarterbacks) in last weekend’s spring game, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that James Franklin will enter fall camp as Missouri’s No. 1 quarterback.

But Gary Pinkell went ahead and confirmed as much during Tuesday’s SEC coaches’ teleconference.

I think the order always matters at every spot,” Pinkel said. “You come out after 15 practices, and there’s many, many reps in those 15 practices and scrimmages and so on and so forth. But James is going to be 1. Maty Mauk’s 2 and Corbin’s going to be 3.”

Franklin was hampered by a nagging shoulder injury last year and his limitations were undeniably part of Mizzou’s 5-7 season. While an open competition was the right way for Pinkel to approach the spring, and that should still be the case in fall camp, there’s no question Franklin gives the Tigers the best chance to win in 2013. At least presently.
