Oregon’s Marcus Mariota also claims Davey O’Brien Award

Marcus Mariota is two-for-two when it comes to awards.

After already being named the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Ducks quarterback was also honored as the winner of the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback.

According to the award’s website, “The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.”

History wasn’t on Mariota’s side, though. He’s the first quarterback from Oregon to win the award, and he joins UCLA’s Troy Aikman as the only winners from the Pac-12 Conference.

TCU’s Trevone Boykin and Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott were counted among the finalists for the award. Both were outstanding this season, but Mariota may be running away with all the hardware.

Mariota is now looking to become the fifth Davey O’Brien award winner in a row to win the Heisman Trophy. The odds are certainly in his favor at this point. He’ll also face last year’s winner, Florida State’s Jameis Winston, at the Rose Bowl in one of the College Football Playoff’s semifinal contests.
