Transfer Who Ripped Wolverines On Exit Had Academic Issues

When Michigan offensive lineman Kurt Wermers announced last week that he was transferring from the school, he cited issues with the coaching staff as being the main impetus behind his departure.

As it turns out, Wermers wasn’t exactly being either forthright or transparent.

According to a report on ESPN.com, Wermers was academically ineligible at the time of his transfer and wouldn’t have been available to the Wolverines anyway in 2009. In fact, the website reported, Wermers wasn’t enrolled in summer school when he decided to trash his way out of Ann Arbor.

In an interview with The Times of Northwest Indiana, the lineman brought back memories of the “eroding family values” issue Justin Boren had when he transferred from the Wolverines to Ohio State last year.

“I really didn’t get along with the new coaches,” Wermers told the paper. “They were bringing in a lot of different kids that were not my kind of crowd. Coach Carr’s staff was a whole different ballgame. It was like a family. But when Rodriguez came in it was a whole different feeling. It was more of a business.

“I figured I’d get out while I could.”

Really Wermers? Get out while you could? Or, should it have been, “get out before my academic ineptness comes to light and my parting shots ring hollow”?

While Wermers may indeed have had an issue with the coaching staff, the fact that his academic house wasn’t remotely in order at the time of his transfer shows that his bitterness might be better directed instead of projected outward toward a staff that may or may not deserve it.
