Darren O’Day has announced his retirement from professional baseball.
O’Day made the announcement on his personal Twitter account. The 40-year-old righty hangs up his cleats after a 15-year career that included stints with the Angels, Mets, Rangers, Orioles, Braves and Yankees. He finishes with a stellar 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 637/172 K/BB ratio across 609 innings (644 appearances) dating back to 2008. He made 28 relief appearances last season for Atlanta.

Braves transferred RHP Darren O’Day from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
O’Day recently had to be pulled off a minor league rehab assignment after spraining his right big toe. He initially landed on the IL on July 12 due to a strained left calf. It’s unclear if we’ll see him again this year.

Darren O’Day was pulled off of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett after spraining his right big toe on Tuesday.
O’Day has been working his way back from a left calf strain, but now he’ll need at least a few extra days to deal with this toe issue as well. The right-hander has been sidelined since July 12.

Darren O’Day (calf) will make his next minor league rehab appearance on Tuesday for Triple-A Gwinnett.
O’Day tossed a scoreless inning last Friday for Single-A Rome in his rehab assignment debut and will face some higher level minor league hitters before returning to the Braves’ bullpen. The 39-year-old right-hander has been out since mid-July due to a left calf strain.

Darren O’Day (calf) fired a scoreless inning on Friday in a minor league rehab appearance for Single-A Rome.
O’Day threw 13 pitches (seven strikes) and also notched one strikeout. The 39-year-old veteran right-hander has been out since mid-July due to a left calf strain and figures to rejoin the Braves’ bullpen sometime later this month.

Darren O’Day (calf) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Rome on Friday.
O’Day has been on the shelf for the past three-and-a-half weeks with a left calf strain. He’ll probably need a few rehab appearances before rejoining the Braves’ bullpen.

Braves placed RHP Darren O’Day on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 12, with a strained left calf.
There’s no public recovery timetable yet, but O’Day will obviously be sidelined through the All-Star break. Kenley Jansen (heart) has been activated from the IL in a corresponding 26-man roster move.

Braves purchased the contract of RHP Darren O’Day from Triple-A Gwinnett.
O’Day provides the Braves with some additional bullpen depth after losing setup specialist Luke Jackson for the season due to a torn UCL. The 39-year-old veteran right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA over 10 2/3 innings for the Yankees last season and tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts in spring training action.

Braves signed RHP Darren O’Day to a minor league contract.
The deal presumably includes an invitation to spring training. O’Day, 39, threw just 10 2/3 innings for the Yankees this year before requiring surgery on his hamstring. Still, he might have something left in the tank. O’Day previously pitched for Atlanta in 2020.

Darren O’Day’s mutual option for 2022 has been declined.
Instead, O’Day will get a $700,000 buyout. He could have opted in at $1.4 million, or the Yankees could have paid him $3.15 million. As is the case with the overwhelming majority of mutual options, it ends with the player in free agency. O’Day threw just 10 2/3 innings with a 3.38 ERA due to injuries, but could be a late-inning option -- possibly even the Yankees at a reduced deal -- for a club in 2022 if healthy.
