I usually do this over the All-Star break, but time didn’t allow for it last week. So here now are my very, very preliminary 2020 player rankings. I’ve done my best to list players where they’ll be eligible next year, and the free agents-to-be are listed without teams. Players with options for next year are still listed with their current teams if those options have a legitimate chance of being exercised. Those players are noted with asterisks.
Along with the position rankings is a top 300 list for 2020. Click to see other preliminary 2020 rankings:

- Of the infield spots, this list would seem to have the most potential for change over the next few months. Can Jose Altuve get healthy and maybe start stealing some bases again? Will Brendan Rodgers get a chance to run away with the second base job in Colorado (No!)? Will Rougned Odor ever hit another single? Then there are so many youngsters I need to see more of: most notably Keston Hiura, Cavan Biggio and Luis Arraez.
- I’m betting big on Rodgers, even though he just underwent shoulder surgery and I’ve never been as high on him as a prospect as some. It’s Coors Field, baby. Of course, since I am listing Rodgers sixth, I’m not buying either Ryan McMahon or Garrett Hampson. Because of his steal ability, Hampson still has a ton of fantasy upside if he lands an everyday gig at second base or in center field. Still, he looked thoroughly overmatched this year, and he’s continued to disappoint in Triple-A.
- Nick Madrigal, the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft, didn’t hit quite as well as hoped in high-A to start the year (.272/.346/.377 in 218 PA), but he’s been on fire since moving up to Double-A (.375/.440/.455). He’d be in the top 20 here if I thought he’d be in the White Sox’s Opening Day lineup. Most likely, he’ll have to wait until June or July.
