    Rockies released C Andrew Knizner.

The 31-year-old backstop was signed to a minor league deal at the start of April. He hit a terrific .279/.371/.590 with 10 homers and 22 RBI in 140 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque. Given the overall lack of quality catching depth around the league, he shouldn’t be out of work for long.

Knizner opted out of his deal with the Rockies after hitting .279/.371/.590 in Triple-A Albuquerque. The 31-year-old backstop will provide some depth behind the plate in the minors for now, but there’s a decent shot he’ll get a chance to show what he can do with Boston before the summer comes to a close.

Knizner bolsters Colorado’s catching depth behind starter Hunter Goodman and caddy Brett Sullivan. The 31-year-old backstop was in camp with the Mariners this spring and wound up losing the backup job to veteran Mitch Garver.
  • FA Catcher #25
Knizner will head out to the open market after the Mariners decided to roll with veteran Mitch Garver as Cal Raleigh’s primary caddy this spring. The 31-year-old backstop got into 33 games for the Giants last year. He should be able to latch on somewhere as emergency catching depth.
  • SEA Catcher #18
It’s about time. The Mariners gave Andrew Knizner a major league deal earlier this winter, apparently because they felt that with having baseball’s best catcher as their starter, they could get away with its 80th-best as his backup. Garver, who, according to MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer, will earn $2.25 million if he makes the team, should overtake Knizner and slide into his old role, though he probably won’t see much time DHing against lefties as he has at some points.
  • SEA Catcher #21
It’s worth $1 million, according to MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer. Knizner secures a big-league deal after hitting .221/.299/.299 in 33 games for the Giants last season. Somewhat interesting is that he had the best defensive numbers of his career during that span. He also struck out at half of his career rate (10/7 K/BB in 88 plate appearances). He’s the clear backup to Cal Raleigh at the moment, though the Mariners still might have interest in a Mitch Garver reunion if the price proves right.
  • FA Catcher #21
The 30-year-old was non-tendered by the Giants back in November after slashing a woeful .221/.299/.299 with one home run and five RBI in 88 games during the 2025 campaign. If it winds up being a major league deal, Knizner would be the favorite to open the season as the understudy to Cal Raleigh.

Knizner was officially cut loose by San Francisco after being designated for assignment earlier on Friday to make room for trade acquisition Joey Wiemer. The 30-year-old backstop should be able to latch on as emergency catching depth somewhere this offseason.
  • SF Catcher #21
The Giants needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster after acquiring Joey Wiemer on Friday and it looks like Knizner drew the short straw this time around. The 30-year-old backstop hit just .221/.299/.299 with one homer and five RBI in 88 plate appearances with the Giants during the 2025 season.
  • SF Catcher #14
San Francisco has reversed course and decided to give Bailey some extra time off to rest and recover after experiencing neck spasms earlier this week. It’ll be Andrew Knizner handling the bulk of the catching duties in his absence.
  • SF Catcher #14
Bailey is on the bench for the second straight contest after being scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with neck spasms. It’ll be Andrew Knizner handling the catching duties again on Wednesday night. The fact San Francisco hasn’t brought up any emergency catching depth seems to suggest that he’s not at risk of landing on the injured list.

Cubs’ manager Craig Counsell told reporters after Saturday’s game that Daniel Palencia (elbow) won’t return until after the All-Star break.

The Cubs’ closer is progressing in his recovery from a minor flexor strain in his right elbow, but the club is going to take a cautious approach and not push him too quickly. Expect the Cubs to continue to patch together the ninth inning in his absence with Jacob Webb the most likely candidate to accrue saves.

Braves signed 1B Carlos Santana to a minor league contract.

As reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Saturday evening, the 40-year-old slugger joins the Braves on a minor league deal. He’ll report to Triple-A Gwinnett where he’ll function as insurance in the even that Dominic Smith’s recent struggles continue. Santana was just 2-for-24 (.083) with eight strikeouts in his limited action with the Diamondbacks before being released on Friday.

Tyler Soderstrom was removed from Saturday night’s battle against the Angels due to hip tightness.

A’s skipper Mark Kotsay told reporters afterwards that it was bothering Soderstrom enough that they had to pull him from the game. He’ll be re-evaluated on Sunday. It sounds like it’s possible the 24-year-old slugger could wind up missing some time with this one. At the very least, expect him to get the day off in Sunday’s series finale against the Halos.

Mets sent INF Zack Short outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Short was designated for assignment on Wednesday when Francisco Lindor returned from the injured list. It’s unclear if the 31-year-old infielder will accept the outright assignment or hit the open market once again and continue his tour around the league.

Nick Allen (hamstring) started a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday.

The 27-year-old defensive specialist has been shelved since early June due to a left hamstring strain. He should only need a handful of games there before he’s ready to rejoin the Astros, provided there’s a spot available for him on the bench.

Wilber Dotel (lat) began a minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona on Saturday.

The 23-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since June 13 with a right lat strain. He’s only expected to need a couple of tune-ups in the minor leagues before he’s cleared to return. On the season, Dotel holds a 5.89 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 19/9 K.BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings with the Pirates.

Jake Fraley (hernia) began a minor league rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Saturday.

He went 0-for-3 with three fly outs in his first game on Saturday. Fraley has been sidelined since May 16 after undergoing surgery to repair a hernia. He’s expected to play in a few games there before moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Durham next week. He appears to be on the fast track in his recovery and could wind up rejoining the Rays before the All-Star break.

Astros optioned RP Kei-Wei Teng to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Teng was knocked around for five runs (four earned) over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Tigers on Saturday. With Cristian Javier set to rejoin the rotation next week though, he became expendable. He’ll continue to serve as extra rotation depth for the Astros at the Triple-A level.

Jo Adell went 2-for-2 with a two-run triple and two HBPs as the Angels topped the A’s 5-2 on Saturday.

Adell is fifth in the majors with 12 HBPs this year, which has helped him post a mediocre .297 OBP in spite of a horrid 81/10 K/BB in 350 plate appearances. It’s odd that he hasn’t hit for more power while showing excellent bat speed and striking out less than usual, but there’s time for things to turn around. He’ll certainly continue to get all of the playing time he can handle on a non-contending Angels team.

Reid Detmers pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball Saturday in a no-decision versus the A’s.

Detmers struck out eight. He isn’t a great bet in shallow leagues while continuing to toil for the hapless Angels, but the good news is that it seems quite likely that he’ll be traded to a contender next month. It’s entirely possible that he’ll be a top starter down the stretch if that happens. He’s due to face the Red Sox next weekend.
