Justin Verlander has a left hamstring strain and has been scratched from Sunday’s start against the White Sox.

First it was going to be Saturday, then it was going to be Sunday, and now it’s not going to happen at all. Verlander remains on the 60-day injured list, but the 43-year-old is finding it hard to get healthy enough to get back on the mound and this latest setback will likely put him out for a few more weeks. The Tigers will likely have Keider Montero start Sunday’s game.

Yankees placed RHP David Bednar on the paternity list.

Congrats to David Bednar and his growing family. He will likely return in the middle of the week and resume his closing duties. The Yankees will likely use a committee approach with him gone. In June, Brent Headrick has had the next best win probability added of all Yankees’ relievers, but Fernando Cruz has been pitching the highest leverage innings. Perhaps Cruz and Headrick will form a committee for the two or three days Bednar is gone.

Esmerlyn Valdez went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI in a win over the Reds on Sunday.

Valdez has started three of the last four games since Spencer Horwitz (hamstring) landed on the injured list and Ryan O’Hearn started playing more first base. Valdez also had a pinch-hit home run in the one game he didn’t start. In those four games, he’s gone 6-for-12 with three home runs, four RBI, and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He’s worth an add in deeper formats if he’s going to play this often, especially if your team needs power.

Eugenio Suárez got hit by a pitch during Sunday’s game against the Reds and will need X-rays.

Suárez was unable to get X-rays on Sunday because his hand was too swollen for the imaging to show anything. The team will wait for the swelling to go down and, presumably, will get X-rays done on Monday. We should have more information once that imaging is done.
