Sam bachman gave up two runs to blow a save against the Angels on Friday.

Bachman was asked to protect a two-run lead, and couldn’t after giving up a two-run homer to Jonah Heim. Kirby Yates also struggled in the 10th, walking and hitting a batter before exiting and taking the loss after Nick Kurtz drew a free pass with the bases loaded. Bachman could get more save chances, but it’s far from a guarantee, and fantasy managers need to be awfully desperate to consider him an option in leagues.

Bachman has emerged as one of the Angels’ most trusted relievers and was working on a streak of 12 straight scoreless appearances before giving up his third and fourth homers of the season today. It seems like a setback for his chances of earning saves and probably gives Kirby Yates’ scant fantasy value a little boost.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
Yates was pitching with a lead for the first time in five appearances since coming off the IL, though that had less to do with his status than the fact that the Angels have done little but trail lately. Up 5-3, they went to Ryan Zerferjahn in the seventh tonight, only to watch him hit back-to-back batters with one out. Sam Bachman came in and, after allowing one inherited runner to score, kept the A’s scoreless through the eighth. That led to Yates taking over in a one-run game, but McNeil sent a ball 364 feet down the right-field line to even things up. The Angels ended up losing in 10. Yates has allowed three runs in five innings since coming off the IL, and his velocity is down a bit more than two mph from last year. He’s probably not going to run away with the closer’s role in Anaheim.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
It’s theoretically possible that Yates takes over the closing role in Los Angeles considering Ryan Zeferjahn and Sam Bachman appears to be the only obstacles standing in his way at the moment. However, he got hit hard in a couple rehab outings where his fastball velocity was down considerably. A wait and see approach seems like the correct move here, but Yates is probably worth a speculative roster spot in extremely deep leagues where saves are hard to find on the waiver wire.

The Angels already had a lefty in the game in Brent Suter, but they wanted to put in more of a power guy to face Caglianone’s power. What followed was a 109-mph homer. The Angels took another blown save in the 10th, as Joey Lucchesi, pitching with a one-run lead in the Angels debut, gave up a three-run homer to lose the game. The Halos’ pen is even more of a mess now with Jordan Romano gone. Maybe Kirby Yates or Ben Joyce will eventually fix things in the ninth, but no one seems trustworthy at the moment. If one absolutely had to roster a currently active Angels reliever, Sam Bachman, who gave up two runs while getting three outs tonight, is probably the best option.

Bachman did the heavy lifting in the Angels’ bullpen game today. He came in after Sam Aldegheri gave a up a Ben Rice homer to start the sixth, cutting the Angels’ lead to two runs, and faced the minimum through the eighth, picking off the lone player to reach against him. It really should have gotten more than a hold, but the win went to Aldegheri. Bachman has a 3.48 ERA in 10 1/3 innings out of the Angels pen. There’s a chance he could factor into the mix for saves if veterans don’t step up, though he’d have to cut down on the walks first. He’s already issued eight.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #40
Bachman got the chance to close with Jordan Romano unavailable, as Romano had pitched in the last two games. He looked fine in the eighth, but he gave up a bloop double to Cal Raleigh, and Julio Rodríguez knocked Raleigh in to give Bachman the blown save. The former first-round pick will be a high-leverage option for Los Angeles, but not likely one who sees many save chances.

With Robert Stephenson (elbow) landing on the injured list, Bachman will get another chance to show what he can do out of the Angels’ bullpen. He has made 19 appearances with the team already on the season, compiling a 4.96 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 14/6 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings of work. Expect him to be used in the middle innings.

Bachman’s latest stint with the Angels lasted only two games as he’s been shipped back to the minors to clear space for Jack Kochanowicz to come up and take the ball against the Rangers.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #40
Bachman returns to the majors to fill Tyler Anderson’s roster spot while the veteran southpaw is away from the club on paternity leave. The 25-year-old righty has posted a lackluster 5.02 ERA across 14 1/3 innings (18 appearances) this season at the highest level.

Bachman has made 18 appearances out of the Angels’ bullpen this season, compiling an uninspiring 5.02 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a 13/6 K/BB ratio across 14 1/3 innings of work. Andrew Chafin will take his place in the Halos’ bullpen.

Manny Machado homered and doubled in the Padres’ 1-0 defeat of the Braves on Monday.

Machado’s 11th homer in the fourth off Grant Holmes accounted for the only run in the finale of what was an incredibly low scoring day of baseball; 24 teams combined to scored 64 runs, with no team scoring more than six runs. Seven of the 12 games saw the teams total five runs or fewer. Machado, a future Hall of Famer, is currently hitting .185/.265/.384, probably due to analytics and algorithms and Driveline, which could all be fixed if someone would hire John Smoltz as a GM and Jeff Frye as a manager.

Michael King shut out the Braves for seven innings to pick up his fifth win Monday.

King had a 6.41 ERA in his previous five starts, but he succeeded tonight even though 12 of the 20 balls in play against him were hard hit. It helped that he walked none, and he struck out five in an outing for the first time in six starts. We’d still be nervous about using him in shallow leagues at the moment, especially since he’s due to face the Dodgers in his next two outings.

Mason Miller protected a 1-0 lead in the ninth for his 21st save Monday against the Braves.

Miller made things a little interesting by allowing a single and a walk with two outs, but he struck out Mike Yastrzemski to end the game. He’s second in the majors in saves, three behind Cade Smith and two ahead of Bryan Baker and Riley O’Brien.

Grant Holmes exited after allowing one run in 4 2/3 innings against the Padres on Monday.

Holmes walked five. He’s pitched a total of 10 1/3 innings and walked 10 in his last three starts, which should have him on thin ice with the Braves. His 4.17 ERA for the season isn’t bad, but that he’s gotten fewer than 15 outs in seven of his 15 starts and more than 15 outs just five times suggests should have his rotation status in question. He’ll likely face the Giants on Sunday.

Austin Riley had three of the game’s 11 hits in the Braves’ 1-0 loss to the Padres on Monday.

Riley wasn’t very good last year and certainly hasn’t been any good in batting .219/.295/.355 this season, but it’d still be very dangerous to write him off while his power remains intact. Maybe he won’t fully rebound, but it’s hard to imagine him not being somewhat better the rest of the way.

Kyle Bradish blanked the Angels for eight innings and struck out nine in the Orioles’ 6-1 victory Monday.

Maybe it shouldn’t be a total surprise that Bradish places on the short list of the league’s most inconsistent starters in his first full year back from Tommy John, but his strong showing at the end of the year did suggest more was in store. Still, things do seem to be getting better; he has a 2.78 ERA in his last nine starts after coming in at 5.03 in the first seven. Overall, he’s allowed one or no runs six times and four or more runs five times. He’ll take a 5-7 record and a 3.64 ERA into his next start versus the Nationals.

Sam Aldegheri yielded five runs in 4 2/3 innings in taking a loss to the Orioles on Monday.

We’re all about looking on the bright side, and Aldegheri struck out three and walked one tonight, which is a nice improvement on his 5/7 K/BB from his previous three starts this season. Perhaps the Angels could look at alternatives prior to Aldegheri’s next start Sunday against the A’s, but it seems more likely that they’ll just stick with him for now and hope that Grayson Rodriguez can come off the IL and take his spot at the beginning of next month.

Kirby Yates struck out three of the four batters he faced Monday against the Orioles.

Yates was pitching with the Angels down 6-0 in the ninth, so this was hardly a crucial appearance for the 39-year-old. Still, it was nice to see him average 91 mph with his fastball for just the second time this season and fan three batters for the first time. His average fastball tonight was still down 1.7 mph from last year, and there’s little reason to expect big things going forward. However, there’s no one in the Angels pen who is clearly a better bet than Yates at the moment.

Taylor Ward went 2-for-5 and hit his fifth homer Monday against the Angels.

And he got to stay in left field the whole way through. That wouldn’t typically be noteworthy, but the Orioles needed someone to play third base after Blaze Alexander got hurt in the third inning tonight. The seemingly obvious move with Jackson Holliday unavailable would have been to lose Coby Mayo as the DH and play him at his natural position, but the Orioles instead galaxy-brained using Leody Taveras at the hot corner, even though Taveras had never played any infield as the pro. Ward, on the other hand, has started at third 42 times as a major leaguer and 101 times as a minor leaguer. Still, Ward stayed put and all worked out in the end. Taveras played five innings at third without incident, and the Orioles did finally sacrifice the DH and stick Mayo at third for the final two innings of a 6-1 win.

Jake McCarthy delivered a three-run triple off Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth to give the Rockies a 3-2 win over the Red Sox on Monday.

Incredibly, the Rockies collected hits in their final eight at-bats tonight. The first four of those, off Garrett Whitlock in the eighth, proved irrelevant, as the Rockies had two runners thrown out on the bases and failed to score. In the ninth, though, they opened up with four straight hits against Aroldis Chapman. The first of those might have been handled by Caleb Durbin at third, and the third was a sac bunt attempt on which the Red Sox were late to cover first base. McCarthy then ended the game with a slapper down the third base line that Jarren Duran kicked around in the left field corner for a triple, handing Chapman his first blown save of the year.
