Sonny Gray allowed one run with 11 strikeouts over seven innings in a win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Gray was excellent against the Rockies in Coors Field, holding them to one run over seven frames. The lone run came on a solo homer by Willi Castro in the second inning. He scattered five other hits and three walks, limiting damage by punching out 11 batters. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 2.95 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 66/20 K/BB ratio across 76 1/3 innings into a start against the Yankees in Boston on Sunday.

Sonny Gray has a no trade clause and has been really good for a Boston team that is only four games out of the Wild Card in the American League, so he shouldn’t be viewed as a slam dunk trade candidate. In addition to that, as Passan notes, his contract is a potential probably because, in addition to his $10 million salary over the final two months of th eseason, his restructed contract includes a $10 million buyout on a $30 million mutual option for 2027. That leaves “Boston somewhat hamstrung unless it’s willing to pay down a significant portion and convince Gray to accept a deal.”

Gray scattered four hits, with one of those being a solo homer by Josh Lowe. He struck out seven against two walks, and he found the zone on 48-of-70 pitches. It wasn’t quite as good as the no-hit bid he had in his previous outing against New York, but it’s another solid outing that sees Gray lower his ERA to 2.61 with a deserved 10-1 record. We’re just as confused as everyone else how that’s not an All-Star, but he’ll make his final start before the break against the Mets on Friday.

Gray was removed immediately after Amed Rosario’s single up the middle with one out in the eighth. Tyron Guerrero replaced him and got out of the inning from there. It’s the deepest Gray has ever carried a no-no, and his ninth and final strikeout of the night gave him 2,000 for his career. He’s tied with Andy Benes on the all-time list there, having passed Billy Pierce and Kevin Appier tonight. He’s seventh among active pitchers in strikeouts and fifth with 134 victories. He’ll face the Angels next weekend.

Homers from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first and Nathan Lukes in the seventh bookended the outing. Gray allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four. It’s his sixth quality start in his last seven tries, though the Red Sox fell to 9-4 in his starts. He’ll face the Rockies in Coors Field next week, but he still seems like a solid enough play. It’ll be just his second career start there; he allowed one run over seven innings and struck out nine while pitching for the Reds there in 2019.

The Rangers put up three hits on Gray in the first inning, with the first run coming around to score on an RBI single by Wyatt Langford. It would be the only run Gray would allow on the night, as the veteran righty locked in to fire five-straight scoreless frames while allowing just two hits and no free passes. Gray has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight straight starts and has made it through six innings in five of those outings. He remains as reliable an option as any and is scheduled to make his next start on Thursday at home against the Blue Jays.

He was facing the Bombers in Yankee Stadium for the first time since an offseason interview about how much he dislikes his former team. Gray gave up two homers and six other hits while allowing two walks and striking out only three, but he really limited the damage in improving to 7-1 with a 3.20 ERA on the year. A couple of double plays, one on a Paul Goldschmidt grounder and another on an Anthony Volpe liner, helped there. Gray due to face the Rays in St. Pete next week.

The run came right away on back-to-back doubles from Travis Bazzana and José Ramírez to start the first, but it was smooth sailing after that. Gray fanned seven, including six with his sweeper. He’ll take a 3.06 ERA into his next start, which should be a fun one. He’ll pitch in Yankee Stadium for the first time since talking in a December interview about how much he hates the Yankees.

Gray gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four. He threw 75 pitches and was removed after four innings. Danny Coulombe started the fifth inning. Gray struck out nine batters in his last start, flashing the upside he’s had over the course of his career. He hasn’t gone more than six innings in any of his nine starts this year and has thrown 70-80 pitches in each of his last four starts. Gray is lined up to face the Guardians on the road next weekend.

Gray was plenty effective in his first two starts since coming off the injured list, but it was nice to see the strikeout ability return tonight. He got five on his sweeper alone. Gray had a 30 percent strikeout rate in 2024 and came in at 27 percent last season, but coming into tonight, he was at just 15 percent in his seven starts this year. The victory makes him 5-1 with a 2.93 ERA. He’ll face the Twins on Sunday.

Gray walked one in his second start back from a hamstring injury. It’s the first time he has cleared five strikeouts in a game, as his swing-and-miss has been curiously absent since joining Boston. He entered Wednesday with a 12.6 K%, easily the lowest of his career. The 36-year-old will look to keep the momentum going in his next appearance, lined up on the road in Kansas City.

Luis Campusano went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk and two runs scored Wednesday in the Padres’ 10-4 drubbing of the Diamondbacks.

Campusano is 5-for-11 with three walks since coming off the IL on Friday. He’ll stay plenty busy behind the plate for the Padres while Freddy Fermin is out, but he also might deserve some DH time once Fermin returns; he’s batting .317/.403/.619 with four homers in 72 plate appearances on the season.

Michael King turned in six innings of one-run ball to defeat the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

King allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four. After a rough spell in late May and the first half of June, he ends the first half having gone 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA in his final four outings prior to the break. Overall, he’s 6-7 with a 3.41 ERA. He’ll probably start the Padres’ first game out of the break next Friday against the Royals.

Jose Cabrera gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Padres.

Since throwing five scoreless innings in his major league debut against the Twins last month, Cabrera has given up 11 runs and walked nine in 12 2/3 innings over three starts. It seems likely that he’ll head back to Triple-A now, as the D-backs could have Michael Soroka ready to go after the break.

Miguel Andujar doubled three times and knocked in two runs versus the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

The three doubles came after a 390-foot flyout his first time up. It would have been a homer in 14 ballparks, according to Statcast. It’s the first time in his career that Andujar has doubled three times in a game. In 2018, when he finished second in the AL with 47 doubles, he had two on eight occasions but never three. Andujar is batting .266/.303/.428 in 234 plate appearances this season. He played fairly regularly in April and May, but the start tonight was just his second in eight games. He might have earned himself another opportunity Thursday against Merrill Kelly.

Mookie Betts singled in Tommy Edman in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie in the Dodgers’ 4-3 win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Betts also walked and scored a run in the first. He was back in the lineup tonight after going 0-for-8 between Sunday and Monday and getting Tuesday off.

Roki Sasaki pitched six innings and allowed three runs Wednesday in a no-decision against the Rockies.

Sasaki surrendered solo homers to Kyle Karros and Edouard Julien in the second and then another run on a walk, a wild pitch, a groundout and a sac fly in the third. That turned out to be the only walk he issued, and he allowed only two hits besides the homers. He struck out five. Considering that he came in with a 10.06 ERA and a 15/11 K/BB in his previous four starts, this is a decent way to end the half. He might eventually get pushed out of the Dodgers rotation if everybody gets healthy at once, but that hardly ever seems to happen.

Tanner Scott fanned two in a flawless ninth for his 13th save Wednesday against the Rockies.

Scott blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning on Monday. but things went smoothly tonight, as he threw just 11 pitches in getting a flyout and then two K’s.

Making his first big-league start, Gabriel Hughes surrendered three runs in six innings Wednesday versus the Dodgers.

Hughes gave up three runs in the first, but that was it. Helping the cause was that Alex Call foolishly used up both of the Dodgers’ challenges on back-to-back pitches in the second. Hughes ended up striking out seven and walking two. He’ll have a case for staying in Colorado’s rotation after the break.

Kyle Karros homered and doubled Wednesday in a loss to the Dodgers.

With his dad awkwardly weighing in from the Dodgers broadcast booth, Karros went 3-for-11 with eight total bases and three walks the last three days. He’s escaped the bottom third of the Rockies order in recent days, and his OPS cracked .800 tonight for the first time all season. He’s still probably not going to offer much value in shallow leagues in the second half, but his stock as a potential long-term third baseman for the Rockies has increased with his performance to date.

Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored in a 13-1 blowout win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Adell and the Angels took it to the Rangers in this one. He homered in consecutive at-bats off starter MacKenzie Gore to help break this game open. Before Adell’s first tank, this game was 1-0. After his second – a 433 foot, 110 mph, three-run shot – it was 7-0 and the rout was on. These were his first home runs in nearly two weeks as he tries to get his season on track.
