Shota Imanaga allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Cubs’ 3-2 victory over the Padres on Monday.

Imanaga gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out four. The 32-year-old left-hander was pulled after getting the first out of the seventh inning and throwing 97 pitches. He’s earned the win in just one of his last nine starts. Imanaga’s ERA is 4.30. He’s lined up to face the Cardinals at home this weekend.

After being pushed back two days due to rainouts, Imanaga did not have his best stuff here. Luckily, the three home runs he gave up didn’t come back to bite him. That’s mostly because the Mets managed to make six errors in this game, but I digress. None of those three homers were cheapies and all of them came against Imanaga’s fastball. His velocity was down just a smidge here too, which is something to watch rather than an immediate cause for concern. All in all, this was a poor result after it’d felt like he was righting the ship and Imanaga now has an ugly 4.40 ERA on the season. He’s scheduled for a two-start week coming up against the Padres and Cardinals with both games at home.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Edward Cabrera will get the ball for his regularly scheduled start on Tuesday with Imanaga being pushed back to Wednesday’s twin bill instead. It’ll be Javier Assad drawing the starting assignment for the other doubleheader contest at Citi Field.

This contest stood zero chance with showers in the forecast throughout the evening at Citi Field. It’ll be made up as a split doubleheader on Wednesday. It’s a tough break for the Cubs as they’re rained out for the second consecutive contest, which pushes Shota Imanaga back an additional day. He’ll be pitching on seven days of rest when he gets the ball on Tuesday at Citi Field. It’ll likely be Kodai Senga drawing the starting assignment for his second turn in New York’s rotation after allowing four runs over four innings in his return from the injured list last week.

It’ll be made up on August 6. There’s actually a ton to unpack here from a fantasy fallout standpoint. Toronto’s scheduled starter, Dylan Cease, will presumably take the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Astros. That would delay Shane Bieber’s return from the injured list for his season debut until Tuesday’s showdown in the Rogers Centre. Cease would close out a two-start week with a showdown against the Rangers at home. Meanwhile, Shota Imanaga gets the ball on Monday against the free-falling Mets as a part of a two-start week that wraps up with a road tilt against the Brewers.

Imanaga gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three. Imanaga has faced the Rockies in each of his last two starts, but didn’t get the win in either game despite pitching pretty well both times. The 32-year-old left-hander left Monday’s game with a 1-0 lead and two men on base and two outs in the sixth inning. Phil Maton promptly hit the first batter he faced with a pitch before walking in the tying run and just like that Imanaga was no longer in line for the win. He’ll take a 4.26 ERA into his next start against the Blue Jays at home this weekend.

Unlike last time out, the Cubs didn’t wait for Imanaga to have a misstep before lifting him tonight. He exited with a 1-0 lead after 90 pitches, but he was left with a no-decision after Jacob Webb gave up two runs in the eighth. Imanaga allowed just one hard-hit ball, a 98-mph groundout, and got five popouts tonight. He’ll face the Rockies again, this time at Wrigley, next Monday.

It should have been two runs in six innings and done. In the sixth, however, the Cubs’ one should-have-been-routine-out was a flyball lost in the twilight by Pete Crow-Armstrong, giving Shea Langeliers a two-run homer. The other three ballsin play in the inning were a 107-mph double and lineouts with xBAs of .890 and .860. In spite of that, Craig Counsell sent Imanaga out for the seventh and watched him give up two more homers. Of the four homers Imanaga allowed (including the inside-the-parker) only the last was a homer in more than half of MLB ballparks. This should have been a positive outing for the left-hander. Instead, it goes as a fourth straight bust, leaving him 4-6 with a 4.74 ERA. His next start will be the first of his career in Coors, making him a pretty weak play as a flyball pitcher.

Imanaga gave up three more homers tonight, so that’s eight in his last three starts. His ERA has jumped from 2.32 to 4.37 during the span. However, he’s still throwing harder and missing more bats than he did last year, so he’s probably going to remain useful in mixed leagues going forward. He’s due to face the A’s at home next time out.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #18
Aside from the homers, of course, Imanaga was pretty good today. He allowed just two other hard-hit balls, and he finished the game with 16 whiffs and a 33 percent CSW. It was definitely a less discouraging performance than when he gave up eight runs to the Brewers on Monday. Still, his ERA has suddenly jumped from 2.32 to 4.04 in the span of a week. He’ll certainly keep giving up some homers, but with his velocity and groundball rate back to where they were in 2024, he figures to remain a valuable fantasy starter.

Imanaga gave up nine hits, walked three and struck out two. The 32-year-old left-hander allowed only one run in the first three innings before the Brewers scored a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings. It was undoubtedly Imanaga’s worst outing of the year. He was having such a good season that his ERA is merely 3.38 now. He’ll face the Astros at home this weekend in a bounce-back spot.

Cam Schlittler is one of seven first-time All-Star pitchers on the American League squad announced Saturday.

Dylan Cease, Parker Messick, Drew Rasmussen, Joe Ryan, Ranger Suarez and Michael Wacha are the other starters on the AL team. The relievers are Bryan Baker, Aroldis Chapman, Jacob Latz, Cade Smith and Louis Varland. It’s the second nod for Rasmussen, Ryan, Suarez and Wacha and the first for all of the rest other than Chapman, who will be going for the ninth time.

Cristopher Sánchez and Jhoan Duran were both named to the NL All-Star squad for the game in Philadelphia.

Joining them on the NL squad are starters Chase Burns, Max Meyer, Jacob Misiorowski, Eduardo Rodriguez, Chris Sale, Paul Skeens, Logan Webb and Yoshinobu Yamamoto and relievers Raisel Iglesias and Mason Miller. Shohei Ohtani might also be available, but it seems less likely that he’ll pitch after Friday’s biceps issue. Misiorowski is also expected to be scratched because he’s slated to start the Sunday before the game. That would make Sánchez the overwhelming favorite to start for the NL.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was voted in as the AL’s starting first baseman, said he intends to sit out the All-Star Game.

Guerrero has been struggling with his back for weeks now, so this seems to be for the best. He’ll still be credited with his sixth All-Star selection. If the AL replaces him with another first baseman (there’s still two on the roster in Nick Kurtz and Ben Rice), then Willson Contreras is most deserving, based on 2026 performance. Still, he might be bypassed in favor of Pete Alonso or Jonathan Aranda.

Logan Gilbert allowed only a single and struck out seven over 7 1/3 innings in the Mariners’ 11-0 shutout of the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Gilbert retired 22 of 23 batters, and Cole Wilcox was a perfect 5-for-5 after coming on in an 11-0 game. Gilbert, originally due to piggyback with Emerson Hancock today, seemed pleased to have the start entirely to himself. His velocity was again up; he’s come in at 96.8, 97.1 and 97.0 mph with his fastball in his last three starts after averaging 95.5 mph in his first 15 outings. He got 18 whiffs today, including 12 with the fastball, and he allowed just three hard-hit balls. The win makes him 7-5 with a 3.19 ERA. He’s fourth in the majors with a 0.95 WHIP and tied for 12th with 114 strikeouts. He’ll get the Rays in his final start before the break.

Shane Bieber was tagged for seven runs in four-plus innings by the Mariners on Saturday.

In 33 career plate appearances with the bases loaded, Bieber hadn’t allowed a grand slam until the second inning today, when Randy Arozarena hit one. He also gave up a two-run homer in the fifth to end his day after 89 pitches. Bieber’s fastball averaged 91.9 mph today, which was basically a match for his first two outings, and he’s already given up six homers in 13 innings. His ability to hit the corners will probably improve as he continues to start regularly, but unfortunately, he just doesn’t seem like a mixed-league guy right now. He’ll likely make his next start Friday in San Diego.

Randy Arozarena finished 3-for-4 and hit his third career grand slam Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Arozarena also walked and scored three times. He had been 0-for-9 with the bases loaded this year before hitting the first grand slam ever surrendered by Shane Bieber. It was his ninth homer through the Mariners’ 90th game, so he’ll need to pick up the pace a little in order to collect his sixth straight 20/20 season. The steals won’t be an issue; he’s already 19-for-23 there.

Dominic Canzone had a two-run homer, an RBI single and a walk Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Canzone’s 14th homer was clubbed 401 feet to right-center. His .273/.349/.551 line gives him an even .900 OPS. Since he often sits against lefties, he doesn’t qualify for the batting title, but that .551 slugging percentage is good for 10th in the majors among players with 200 plate appearances.

Ernie Clement went 0-for-3 against the Mariners in Saturday’s shutout loss.

Clement is 14-for-60 with one RBI in his last 17 games, with his slump briefly predating his brief absence due to a hip injury, and he’s now sitting at .293/.316/.430 for the season. Remarkably, though, he was the leading vote-getting in AL All-Star balloting anyway. He’s on pace to finish with 13 homers, 53 RBI, 69 runs scored and about two WAR in 622 plate appearances.

Bryce Harper was named a National League All-Star reserve.

Harper will have a chance to play in his home park with this year’s festivities taking place in Philadelphia. Kyle Schwarber also joins the team as a reserve, and Brandon Marsh was named a starter for the game. Harper and Schwarber will be joined by catchers William Contreras and Hunter Goodman; 1B Matt Olson; 2B Luis Arraez, 3B Sal Stewart, SS Otto Lopez; and outfielders Pete Crow-Armstrong, James Wood, Corbin Carroll and Jordan Walker.

Kevin McGonigle was named to the American League All-Star team.

McGonigle is one of two rookie infielders who made the roster, with Travis Bazzana of the Guardians also claiming a spot. They’ll be joined by catchers Dillon Dingler and Adley Rutschman; first basemen Ben Rice and Nick Kurtz; third baseman Miguel Vargas and outfielders Randy Arozarena, Cody Bellinger and Riley Greene, along with designated hitter Yandy Díaz.
