Javier Assad to start on Thursday against Cards

McDermott was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Cole Irvin. The 27-year-old McDermott was pitching out of the bullpen for the Dodgers, posting a 4.10 ERA in 26 1/3 innings in Triple-A, but he had once been a highly regarded starting pitching prospect in the Orioles system, so it remains to be seen what the Mets’ plan for him is.

Doyle was just activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday and went 2-for-7 with a double, a run, and an RBI in two games. The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries this season, but he looked great on his rehab assignment and slashed .260/.317/.446 in 149 games in 2024 with 23 home runs and 30 steals while playing elite defense in center field. His value obviously takes a hit outside of Coors Field, but if he is the regular center fielder in a good White Sox lineup, he will retain some deep league value.

Trivino had been on the IL since July 8 with a back issue. He’s healthy again now, having pitched two scoreless innings in Triple-A on a rehab assignment, but the Phillies declined to make room for him in their bullpen. There’s a good chance he’ll get picked up by one of the teams looking for warm bodies after trading their relievers.

Henry was up for a few days last month with both Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs on the IL. He’s probably a better backup option than Stubbs, but good luck convincing the Phillies of that.

Marquez is a pretty solid return for two months of Luis Arraez and a middle reliever. The 20-year-old is the fourth-ranked prospect in the Phillies’ system and has dominated this season, posting a 1.68 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 93/19 K/BB ratio in 59 innings split between Single-A and High-A. Marquez has good command of the strike zone with three pitches, including a plus changeup. How far he will go depends on his ability to gain feel for spin and pick up a breaking ball that he can consistently use against right-handed pitchers. Right now, he is using a cutter which has been working well against hitters at the lower levels, but he will likely need to add something else as he advances through the affiliates.

Kilian missed all of last season with a labrum strain, and he returned this season as a full-time reliever. He has posted a 4.26 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 53/20 K/BB ratio in 44 1/3 innings for the Giants. He’s been mostly better than those numbers would indicate, but a few bad appearances have dragged the surface-level stats down. He’s an interesting add for the middle of the Phillies’ bullpen. Erik Miller will likely continue to get the save chances in San Francisco.

Spikerman isn’t really much of a prospect. He’s 23 years old and slashing .260/.419/.340 in 30 games at High-A. He does have an impressive 19.5 percent walk rate and sub-9 percent swinging strike rate to go along with 18 steals, so there are some solid traits here, but it seems like a long shot he’ll emerge as an impactful player for the Mets.

Gabrysh was not one of the Phillies’ top 30 prospects. He does have decent strikeout upside with an 89/34 K/BB ratio in 68 1/3 innings at High-A this season. He also has a 5.14 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. He has both a four-seamer and a sinker that sit in the mid-90s, and he pairs that with a slider, sweeper, and changeup. Given his swing-and-miss results and deep pitch mix, there are some intriguing pieces to work with for the Mets.

This move was reported earlier in the day and is now official. Raley has been great for the Mets, posting a 1.96 ERA in 41 1/3 innings this season. He’ll add another reliable arm to the Phillies’ bullpen.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi hears the same. Eovaldi has no-trade protection, which can be a big hurdle with deadline deals. If the Rangers sell, they’d be doing so while still possessing a 37 percent chance of reaching the playoffs, according to Fangraphs’ odds. They’re in a virtual tie with the Mariners, 2 1/2 games back of the Astros in the AL West.
