Spencer Miles impressive as bulk reliever

Spencer Miles tossed three shutout innings with five strikeouts, one walk, and allowed one hit on his way to the win against the Mets on Wednesday.

Miles was very impressive here despite only going three innings on 46 pitches. Both his fastball and sinker sat between 97 and 98 mph and the latter flashed some impressive movement. His curveball flashed too and he was willing to throw it against hitters from both sides of the plate. There was enough here to make us think about adding him in very deep leagues. Otherwise, Patrick Corbin followed him as more of a bulk reliever going five innings, allowing three runs, and earning the save. With a 5.11 ERA, he should not be on our radar.

Miles will get his third start of the season after tossing three shutout innings Wednesday against the Metts. The 25-year-old will likely go no more than five innings in the outing, and there would be just as much risk as there is reward in using him as a streamer in that contest.

Schneider told reporters it’ll likely be rookie Spencer Miles getting the ball for a bullpen game in place of Corbin, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Mets. The 36-year-old veteran has pitched to a cromulent 5.09 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 52/24 K/BB ratio across 69 innings over 15 starts this season. His rotation spot will likely go to Max Scherzer (back) once he’s ready to come off the injured list in a few weeks.

Corbin didn’t have it from the get-go. The Rangers jumped on him for three runs in the first inning and he had to dance out of trouble or else it would’ve been worse. It took him 34 pitches just to get through that frame and then Justin Foscue took him deep for a two-run shot in the third. He held on until the fifth, but was pulled before facing some of the Rangers’ righties for a third time. On the season, he has a 5.09 ERA and is scheduled to face the Mets at home next time out.

Corbin tossed a scoreless first inning, then allowed the first two batters to reach in the second for Matt Shaw, who took Corbin deep for a three-run blast to put the Cubs on the board. He labored through the next two innings and left the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth at 101 pitches, only 57 for strikes. He scattered six hits and three walks in all while striking out four. The 36-year-old left-hander will take a 4.73 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a 47/23 K/BB ratio across 64 2/3 innings into a start against the Rangers in Toronto on Thursday.

Corbin struck out three and didn’t walk anyone. The Blue Jays have dealt with several pitching injuries this season, forcing them to rely on the veteran southpaw for innings. Max Scherzer recently returned from the IL, and Shane Bieber could be back shortly too, so it remains to be seen what happens with the rotation. Corbin’s next scheduled outing comes against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Corbin gave up four hits, including a two-run homer to Adolis García as he allowed four runs for the second consecutive start. The interesting wrinkle here is that Simeon Woods-Richardson tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen in his Toronto debut, which could set up a potential piggyback situation moving forward. Corbin is not a recommended fantasy option when he faces the Yankees on Sunday.

Schneider also added that Max Scherzer (forearm) will be activated to start Wednesday’s series finale at the Rogers Centre with Trey Yesavage being pushed back to Friday’s showdown against the Yankees. The influx of veteran reinforcements also pushes rookie standout Spencer Miles back to a long relief role. It’s a stunning turn of events that Toronto has a legitimate five-man rotation again after piecing things together for most of the last two months. Cease threw 75 pitches in his final rehab outing and shouldn’t have any limitations in his return from the injured list.

Miles entered after Braydon Fisher’s scoreless first and allowed just two hits into the sixth inning. He departed with one on and one out in that frame, and Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer off Jeff Hoffman to get Miles charged with a second run. Miles moved to 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA, which is incredible for a Rule 5 pick whose professional experience had consisted of 10 1/3 innings in the Complex League and 4 1/3 innings in Low-A ball coming into the year. He’s probably going back to the bullpen now with the Jays getting veterans back and also having two days off coming up.

Braydon Fisher will take the ball as Toronto’s opener. The big question is what happens to Miles once Dylan Cease (hamstring) and Max Scherzer (forearm) are ready to rejoin Toronto’s rotation in the near future. The 25-year-old has pitched well in a bulk relief role recently, despite getting lit up for six runs by the Orioles last weekend. He’s a reasonable streaming option in deeper mixed leagues based on his season-long numbers, but Baltimore has had success against him and will be seeing him for the second time in less than a week, which amplifies the risk.

Corbin was done in by a three-run home run from Mauricio Dubón in the third inning. His outing was fairly clean otherwise, but he still isn’t missing enough bats and allowing too much hard contact to genuinely be trusted. He currently has a 3.98 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 16 walks across 54 1/3 innings on the season as a remarkably important plug-and-play starter in the Blue Jays’ rotation. Next up is a horrifying two-start week against the Phillies and Yankees with both starts coming at home.

Ranger Suarez (adductor) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday.

There’s a chance Suarez, who was able to play catch on Tuesday without any issues, will be able to take the ball against the Mets on Saturday to close out the first half, but that decision won’t be made until later this week. It’s a challenging situation for fantasy managers to navigate, but it looks like there’s a decent chance that he avoids a trip to the injured list. He’ll certainly benefit from next week’s extended All-Star break. There should be a definitive update on his status following his next throwing session on Thursday.

Cardinals designated LHP Bruce Zimmermann for assignment.

Zimmermann allowed three runs over five innings during the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Brewers. The 31-year-old lefty figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and remain with St. Louis as organizational depth.

Jesús Luzardo, Braxton Ashcraft and Riley O’Brien have been added to the National League’s roster for the MLB All-Star Game as replacement for Paul Skenes, Jacob Misiorowski and Max Meyer.

It’s a colossal bummer for baseball fans hoping to see Misiorowski hurling triple-digit heaters during next week’s Midsummer Classic, but this was always the expected outcome here. Skenes, Misorowski and Meyer are all taking the ball for their respective club’s first-half finales on Sunday, which means there was zero chance they would be able to pitch in the All-Star Game just three days later. Luzardo, Ashcraft and O’Brien are headed to the game for the first time in their respective careers. It’s likely going to be Shohei Ohtani taking the ball to start for the National League based on how things are lining up from a schedule standpoint.

Luis Lara is in center field and hitting second in the nightcap of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals.

Lara will make his highly anticipated major-league debut after sitting out the front-end of the twin bill. The switch-hitting 21-year-old top prospect signed a seven-year extension last month and earns a shot with Milwaukee after slashing a robust .321/.432/.470 with nine homers and 24 steals in 346 plate appearances at Triple-A Nashville. He offers an intriguing blend of fantasy-relevant skills and is worthy of a speculative pickup in deeper mixed leagues. The central question for fantasy managers is how much the Brewers are willing to put on his plate at this early stage of his big-league career.

David Hamilton has been diagnosed with a mild left hamstring strain.

Brewers skipper Pat Murphy expressed optimism that it’ll be a minimum injured list stint for Hamilton, but it might be too early to make that determination. The 28-year-old speedster figures to be out through next week’s All-Star break. Milwaukee brought up top prospect Luis Lara to take his roster spot and provide the club with a versatile bench option with some speed.

Kahlil Watson is in center field and hitting second on Tuesday against the Twins.

Watson finds himself batting in the premium lineup spot for the second straight contest. The 23-year-old former first-round pick got off to a frosty start, but he’s now hitting .246 (14-for-57) with one homer and six steals in 17 games since arriving in the majors last month.

Pirates signed OF Joshua Palacios to a minor league contract.

Palacios hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since getting into 51 games for the White Sox during the 2025 campaign. The 30-year-old corner outfielder got into 114 contests for Pittsburgh from 2023-2024. He’s merely organizational depth at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Twins SS prospect Kaelen Culpepper is dealing with a glute strain.

Culpepper was officially placed on the minor league injured list on Tuesday with a glute strain. It’s the same hip-related issue that forced him to miss time last month. The 23-year-old has certainly shown enough on the doorstep of the majors to warrant a call-up to the big leagues, but that won’t happen until he’s healthy again. He’s a worthwhile stash in deeper mixed leagues, but fantasy managers in shallow formats can probably find a better use for his roster spot.

Dodgers sent C Chuckie Robinson outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Robinson will stick around as emergency organizational depth after being jettisoned from Los Angeles’ 40-man roster earlier this week. The 31-year-old backstop went 2-for-23 during an eight-game stint with the Dodgers. Eliezer Alfonzo will back up Dalton Rushing until Will Smith (neck) returns from the injured list.
