Spencer Miles tossed a scoreless ninth against the Red Sox for his first major league save Tuesday.

The Jays weren’t going to use Louis Varland or Tyler Rogers tonight, but that posed no problem, as Chase Lee, Brendon Little, Braydon Fisher and Miles combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief. Miles, getting his first chance to close, pitched for the third time in four days. Because of concerns about his workload, it looks like the Jays are going to let him finish out his rookie season as a short reliever instead of considering him as a rotation replacement for Trey Yesavage or Jameson Taillon.

Rays recalled RHP Jesse Scholtens from Triple-A Durham.

Scholtens has a 3.82 ERA in nine appearances with the Rays, mostly working as a starter or bulk reliever, with 30 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports he’ll “likely” pitch Friday, we’d assume in a bulk reliever role, against the Orioles.

    Rays signed INF/OF Jorge Mateo.

He’ll be on the major league roster with Carson Williams optioned down. Mateo lost starting work to Jim Jarvis in early July and had mostly been a bench option since. He’ll probably be much the same in Tampa, though perhaps he’ll join a platoon.

Rays optioned INF Carson Williams to Triple-A Durham.

Jorge Mateo will take his roster spot. Williams has mostly been an up-down replacement rather than anything resembling a top prospect this year, hitting .108/.154/.216 in 40 plate appearances for the Rays and .226/.318/.329 for the Bulls.

Twins activated OF Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list.

He’ll serve as the 27th man for today’s game in Iowa, and we’re presuming will stick around afterwards. Buxton missed about two weeks with his latest hip impingement and has been hampered by the hip all season; start him while he’s healthy.

Tigers recalled OF Trei Cruz from Triple-A Toledo.

Cruz had five hitless plate appearances for the Tigers in mid-June and will try to do better than that this time around as a replacement for James Outman.

Tigers placed CF James Outman (concussion) on the 7-day injured list.

Often players take longer than seven days on the concussion injured list, so don’t expect an instant return for Outman. Outman had just six plate appearances in his last 12 appearances as he’d mostly been used as a defensive sub. He’s hit .172/.235/.318 this season.

Kazuma Okamoto is starting at third base and hitting fifth in Thursday’s game against the Red Sox.

He’s been bothered by a knee contusion of late, missing games on Monday and Tuesday and DHing on Wednesday. It’s good news that he’s back at third base. He’ll take on Red Sox LHP Peyton Tolle today.

Adley Rutschman is not in Boston’s starting lineup against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Rutschman is 1-for-6 with three walks in his first two games with the Red Sox. Connor Wong will take over at catcher in a day-game-after-a-night-game scenario.

Taylor Ward (quad tightness) is not in Seattle’s starting lineup against the Yankees on Thursday.

He’s reportedly available to play off the bench, but he won’t start against LHP Max Fried. With Cal Raleigh taking over at DH, Jhonny Pereda will get the start in Ward’s absence.

Cole Young (illness) is not in Seattle’s starting lineup against the Yankees on Thursday.

No surprise after he left last night’s game with the illness. Leo Rivas will draw the start and play shortstop.
