Tigers placed RHP Will Vest on the 15-day injured list with right posterior elbow inflammation.

Vest last pitched on June 27th and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in one inning. He clearly wasn’t right during that outing, and now we know why. He will undergo further imaging to determine how long he will be sidelined.
Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

Hinch noted that no surgery is expected to be needed, just extra rest and recovery time. The Tigers are still hopeful that Vest will be able to rejoin the bullpen at some point before the regular season concludes. If he is able to return, it probably won’t be until late August or early September.

Vest came on with a two-run lead and two on and two outs in the eighth inning. He struck out Jasson Domínguez to end the inning and retired the side in order in the ninth inning. Vest has just two saves this year with one of them coming while Kenley Jansen was on the injured list. While Vest is one of the Tigers’ most trusted relievers and in the mix for saves, expect Jansen, who didn’t pitch Monday, to continue to see most of the save opportunities.

It wasn’t the smoothest of frames, as he allowed a leadoff single to Josh Naylor before picking him off for the first out of the inning. He then plunked Randy Arozarena before Dillon Dingler picked him off of first base. Vest then took care of Luke Raley on strikes to end the inning and became the beneficiary when the Tigers scored twice to walk it off in the home half of the inning. Vest continues to operate as the Tigers’ closer while Kenley Jansen is sidelined.

There’s a lot to unpack here. Kyle Finnegan came on to put out a sixth-inning fire and recorded four outs earlier in the contest while Detroit was leading by four runs. Vest was summoned to get the final two out of the eighth inning before coming back out to toss a perfect ninth for his first save of the year. It seems like Kyle Finnegan will be Detroit’s preferred closing option while Kenley Jansen (groin) is on the injured list, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Vest got a few chances as well.

Vest was brought in to get out of the seventh inning and he did just that, retiring Jorge Soler and Wade Meckler in order to end the inning. Vest even got two of the first three batters out in the eighth inning before things went off the rails. A double by Logan O’Hoppe drove in a run, cutting the Tigers lead to a single run. Zach Neto singled on the ninth pitch the at-bat before Mike Trout walked on six pitches. With Vest now over 30 pitches, he was inexplicably allowed to face Vaughn Grissom with the bases loaded. Grissom’s grand slam was just his third home run in his last 206 at-bats. Vest’s blown save was his third, the loss was his second and his ERA sits at 7.88.

This wound up being a strange situation because Tigers manager A.J. Hinch opted to use closer Kenley Jansen against the heart of Cleveland’s lineup to protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning before giving the ball to Vest to face the bottom of the order. That gambit backfired as Vest surrendered back-to-back singles to Daniel Schneemann and Travis Bazzana before Patrick Bailey delivered a game-tying ground out a couple batters later. He managed to strike out Brayan Rocchio to preserve a tie ballgame, but the damage was already done. Cleveland went on to score a couple runs in extra-innings and close out a comeback win.

Vest will rejoin the Tigers’ bullpen on Sunday after missing a couple of weeks due to inflammation in his forearm. Before he was shelved, Vest posted an unsightly 6.17 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 13/6 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings of work. Ty Madden (forearm) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Vest tossed a perfect inning on Friday in a minor league rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers apparently saw enough that they’re ready to bring him back, likely for Sunday’s series finale against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old righty reliever hit the shelf with forearm inflammation back on May 2. He’ll operate in a setup capacity for Detroit.

The 30-year-old right-hander has been shelved since May 2 due to right forearm inflammation. The Tigers’ bullpen has been in shambles lately, so a return to health from Vest would go a long way toward stabilizing things at the back end for the slumping Tigers.

There is no timetable for Vest to return at the moment. The 30-year-old high-leverage arm hits the shelf after Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Friday that he’s been pitching through an injury. He’s struggled to an inflated 6.17 ERA across 11 2/3 innings of work this season.

Royals signed first-round pick OF Zion Rose.

Rose receives a $5.81 million signing bonus, which is well under-slot relative to the $7.74 million slot value for the sixth-overall pick. The 21-year-old was one of the biggest surprises of the first round when Kansas City made him a top-10 pick, but he’s the type of polished collegiate hitter whose well-rounded skill set lacks any glaring weaknesses. Unless the Royals overhaul his swing to add a few degrees of launch angle, his fantasy ceiling appears somewhat limited. There’s plenty of raw power upside here, which makes Rose a name to watch during the early stages of his professional career.

Rockies activated RHP Tomoyuki Sugano from the 15-day injured list.

Sugano gets the ball for Saturday’s showdown against the Reds at Coors Field following a minimum stay on the injured list due to back spasms. The 36-year-old has forged a respectable 4.80 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 48/23 K/BB ratio across 84 1/3 innings over 16 starts in his Colorado debut. He can be safely ignored in most, if not all, fantasy formats based on his lack of strikeout upside.

Rockies placed RHP Jeff Criswell on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

No word yet regarding how much time Criswell could potentially miss. The 27-year-old has tossed four innings across three relief appearances for Colorado this season.

Jahmai Jones is in left field and hitting eighth on Saturday against the Rays.

Jones will make his Red Sox debut, weather permitting, against Tampa Bay lefty Ian Seymour after being acquired from the Tigers in a trade earlier this week. The 28-year-old has had success in a lefty-mashing platoon role in previous years, so Boston’s front office is rolling the dice that a change of scenery does the trick. It’ll be Jarren Duran on the bench to open this one as the Red Sox try for their 12th consecutive victory.

Orioles signed first-round pick OF Eric Booth Jr.

Booth receives nearly full-slot deal at $7.32 million to forego a commitment to Vanderbilt after being selected seventh overall. The 18-year-old prep outfielder is a well above-average runner, which gives him a clear path to fantasy relevance down the road. He’s a few hyperspace jumps from the majors at this early stage of his development, but he’s one of the more intriguing long-term projects to watch in his draft class.

Miguel Vargas (hand) is in the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Blue Jays.

Vargas checked out fine after being hit by a pitch on the left hand during the eighth inning of Friday’s blowout win in Toronto to kick off the second half. The 26-year-old middle-of-the-order force is at third base and hitting third following the injury scare.

Juan Soto (calf) is in the lineup at DH for Saturday’s showdown against the Phillies.

Soto is back in New York’s lineup without missing any additional time following an early exit from Thursday’s second-half opener with left calf soreness. The 27-year-old fantasy superstar is at DH and hitting second to face Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo on Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Fantasy managers should continue to closely monitor his status throughout the weekend, but Soto doesn’t appear to be at risk of missing any additional game action.

Brewers recalled OF Blake Perkins from Triple-A Nashville.

Perkins returns to the big leagues, likely to fill a spot on Milwaukee’s bench, with right fielder Sal Frelick hitting the injured list with a shoulder strain. The 29-year-old hit .157 (14-for-89) with one homer and three steals in 53 games for the Brewers earlier this season.

Brewers placed OF Sal Frelick on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

Frelick is likely facing an extended absence after aggravating a lingering shoulder ailment on a throw from right field during Friday’s second-half opener against the Marlins. Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters afterwards that he could be down for a while. Frelick said that he’s been dealing with the shoulder issue for nearly two months and will undergo an MRI to determine the severity. There should be a definitive return timeline at some point in the coming days. Frelick’s absence opens the door for top prospect Luis Lara to play everyday in right field. He boasts an intriguing blend of fantasy-relevant tools and is worthy of a speculative roster spot in all formats.

Yankees signed RHP Bradley Hanner to a one-year contract.

Hanner has been officially added to New York’s 40-man roster, but will remain stationed at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for now. The 27-year-old reliever has posted a sparkling 1.99 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 50/16 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings this season. He figures to make his Yankees debut at some point later this summer.
