Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a walk on Wednesday against the Twins.

This was just another day at the office for Alvarez. Three batted balls hit harder than 100 mph, three more hits, a walk, and he raised his batting average to .319 in the process. His season is still so ridiculously impressive as we approach the All-Star break that the Astros’ broadcast flashed a triple crown graphic during this game. With 26 home runs and 60 RBI to go with that .319 average – each of which are top-two in the American League – it’s not a crazy conversation to have.
Swanson red-hot in 'unfathomable' turnaround
James Schiano highlights Dansby Swanson's offensive surge over the past 13 games with the Cubs, which includes nine homers, 29 RBIs, and a place in the history books.

Alvarez was quite literally the extent of the Astros’ offense here. His solo home run accounted for their only run and one of their three total hits. That was his 27th home run and 61st RBI of the season as he further positions himself for a triple crown pursuit in the second half. Also, it didn’t show up in the box score, but had a 118.5 mph groundout in the eighth inning. That was the hardest hit ball of his impressive career.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez collected three hits against the Twins on Tuesday, but none bigger than his blast in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, he took Joe Ryan deep for a grand slam to highlight a six-run inning for Houston. The 29-year-old slugger is up to 26 homers, 59 runs scored, and 60 RBI while slashing .314/.428/.618 across 374 plate appearances.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez celebrates his 29th birthday by taking a seat for the just the second time all season after going hitless in three consecutive games. It’s his first time out of Houston’s lineup since May 24. The 29-year-old slugger has been arguably the best pure hitter in baseball this season, slashing .314/.427/.619 with an American League-leading 25 homers and 56 RBI through 83 games. His 182 wRC+ is tops in baseball by a considerable margin. It’ll be Yainer Diaz taking a turn at DH with Brice Matthews handling left field.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez, who is second in the majors in homers and first in OPS, is obviously on track to make his fourth All-Star roster, but he’s never taken part in the Derby. He only really had a chance in 2024, as he was injured and didn’t take part in the All-Star Game in 2022 and ’23. He wasn’t an All-Star while missing most of last season.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez got the scoring started with a solo shot off Slade Cecconi in the bottom of the first. It was his 25th homer of the season. Fantasy managers are likely holding their breath with every game he plays, as his injury history has been painful to stomach at times. But so far in 2026, everything is coming together the way projections always made it seem possible. Alvarez has started all but one game for the Astros, putting him on track to set career highs across the board in counting stats.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez is on a different level right now. He became the first Astros player since Jeff Bagwell in 1994 to hit two home runs in the same inning, and Alvarez did so in the first. The second of which was a grand slam that capped off a legendary nine-run top of the first for the Astros where Alvarez drove home six of those runs. Those homers brought him to 24 on the season, which tied Kyle Schwarber for the league-lead. His 1.092 OPS also leads the league by a longshot and his .321 batting average is second in the AL. As of this moment, he’s the clear-cut MVP frontrunner in what’s been a sensational bounceback season after an injury-marred 2025.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
There has been some speculation that the Astros could look to trade Alvarez at the deadline this year if they continue to fall out of playoff contention. The idea behind the speculation was that Alvarez would bring in a huge influx of talent for a roster that seems to lack depth, and it would rid the Astros of a defensive logjam created by Alvarez’s being a designated hitter. However, as Brown mentioned, Alvarez is in the fourth year of a six-year, $115 million extension, so there is no pressure on the Astros to trade him. They traded Kyle Tucker when he was heading into his final season, so there may be more reason to trade Alvarez after the 2027 season, if they followed the same path, but he’s not going anywhere for now.

Alvarez greeted rookie Kade Morris rudely in his major league debut with a second inning grand slam to put this game out of reach early. The ball got out in a hurry and nearly landed in the upper deck in right field at Daikin Park in Houston. He now has a 1.084 OPS to lead the league along with 22 home runs, one shy of Kyle Schwaber for the league lead there. If you told someone that Alvarez was the best hitter in baseball right now, they would struggle to argue with it.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez got the scoring started early, taking Bubba Chandler deep for a two-run homer in the first inning. He later drew a walk in the third, then drove in a run with a base hit in the ninth. The 28-year-old slugger is up to 21 homers while hitting an incredible .305/.419/.645 with 40 runs scored and 42 RBI across 267 plate appearances.
  • HOU 3rd Baseman #15
Paredes has been struggling of late, hitting .164 (9-for-55) with three homers and five RBI over his last 15 games. Astros manager Joe Espada has opted to move him down in the order after mostly hitting second in recent weeks. It’ll be red-hot sluggers Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker moving up to second and third in the order to pick up a few additional at-bats with Taylor Trammell moving into the cleanup spot.

Reds activated RHP Hunter Greene from the 60-day injured list.

Greene returns to Cincinnati’s rotation after missing the first three months of the season recovering from surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies from his pitching elbow. The hard-throwing 26-year-old fantasy ace shouldn’t have any workload restrictions in his long-awaited season debut after throwing 82 pitches over 6 1/3 innings during his final rehab start for Triple-A Louisville last weekend. He’s struggled to stay healthy since arriving in the majors a couple years ago, but delivered a phenomenal 2.76 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 132/26 K/BB ratio across 107 2/3 innings last year, making him one of the more impactful arms in the fantasy landscape on a per-inning basis.

Reds designated OF Will Benson for assignment.

Benson showed some flashes of power/speed combo fantasy potential at various points during his career, but was never quite able to establish himself as a long-term everyday option for the Reds in a corner-outfield role. The 28-year-old has been removed from Cincinnati’s crowded 40-man roster after being shipped to the minors back in late June. He figures to attract some interest on waivers.

The Dodgers are calling up Eliezer Alfonzo from Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

Alfonzo finally receives the call to the big leagues after spending nearly a decade in the minors. The 26-year-old Venezuelan native was hitting .313/.392/.422 with one homer at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. He’ll give the Dodgers some additional catching depth behind Dalton Rushing with the club deciding to move on from Chuckie Robinson, who went 2-for-23 in eight games since being called up.

Brandon Nimmo (shoulder) is back in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Tigers.

Nimmo returns to right field and is hitting cleanup following a four-game absence after suffering a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder last weekend. The 33-year-old corner outfielder somehow managed to avoid a trip to the injured list and only wound up missing a couple games. He’s hitting .262/.333/.420 with eight homers, 29 RBI and three steals in 354 plate appearances in his Rangers debut this season.

Nationals acquired LHP Tom Cosgrove from the Astros for cash.

Cosgrove fortifies Washington’s paper-thin left-handed relief depth. He’ll head to Triple-A Rochester after posting a respectable 4.30 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 29/21 K/BB ratio across 29 1/3 innings in Houston’s system this season. He’s made 74 career appearances in the big leagues since 2023.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Max Fried (elbow) is close to making a minor league rehab start.

Fried is slated to throw roughly 35 pitches during a live batting practice session later this weekend with Boone adding that he’ll do so again next week before potentially heading out for a minor league rehab start. The 32-year-old fantasy ace has been out with a bone bruise in his elbow since mid-May. It looks like he has a strong chance of returning to New York’s rotation sometime after the All-Star break.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Clarke Schmidt (elbow) could face hitters in a live batting practice session next week.

Schmidt is on track to progress to facing hitters before the All-Star break and figures to rejoin New York’s pitching equation at some point in the second half. He could wind up being utilized as a multi-inning relief option if there isn’t a rotation spot available once he’s ready to go. The 30-year-old has been on the shelf all season recovering from last year’s Tommy John surgery.

Kumar Rocker will have his next start pushed back to Sunday against the Tigers.

Rocker will receive an extra day of rest with Cal Quantrill being moved up to take the ball on Saturday afternoon against Detroit. The 26-year-old has strung together back-to-back strong outings, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two runs over 11 innings against the Blue Jays and Marlins in his last two starts. There’s some definite streaming appeal for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues based on his recent efforts.

Red Sox RHP Tommy Kahnle elected free agency.

No surprise here. Kahnle will test the open market after declining an outright assignment from the Red Sox. The 36-year-old veteran reliever posted an underwhelming 8.00 ERA across nine innings during a couple weeks in Boston’s bullpen.
