Padres release Pablo Reyes

It didn’t take Reyes long to find a new opportunity after being jettisoned by the Padres last week. The 32-year-old journeyman infielder has appeared in 259 career games in the big leagues since 2018. He’ll provide Los Angeles with some emergency depth at Triple-A Salt Lake heading into the second half of the season.

There’s nothing unexpected here, but Schnell did make a sneaky run at the bench spot that’s probably going to Bryce Johnson. McKenzie was a mess in camp, but he was a mess throwing about three mph harder than he did in his one really good year with Cleveland. If he finds some command in the minors, he might prove helpful at some point.

Reyes got into 24 contests this past season for the Yankees before being released in late August. The 32-year-old journeyman infielder has bounced for nearly a decade at this juncture, appearing in 257 games between the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Brewers and Pirates. He’ll fortify San Diego’s infield depth heading into spring training.

Reyes spent the last two months at Triple-A Syracuse in New York’s farm system. The versatile 31-year-old infielder got into 24 contests earlier this season for the Yankees.

Reyes will remain in New York after being removed earlier this week from the cross-town Yankees’ 40-man roster. The well-traveled 31-year-old fortifies the Mets’ middle infield depth. He got into one game for the club last year before being shipped to the Yankees. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.

Reyes has the option to elect free agency, but might wind up sticking around with New York as emergency infield depth. The 31-year-old bench infielder was removed from the Yankees’ active roster earlier this week and went unclaimed on waivers.

Reyes hit .194/.242/.226 over 34 plate appearances in his bit role with the Bombers. His versatility makes him handy to have around as a 26th man, but he’s just a lifetime .245/.305/.342 hitter in the majors.

Chisholm takes a seat after Friday’s three-hit explosion, which featured his ninth homer of the season. He also stole two bases during that contest. It’ll be Pablo Reyes getting a start against his former club on Saturday night.

Cabrera’s leg gave out on him on a non-contact play at home, and there’s a good chance he’s going to miss the rest of the season. The Yankees were already set to activate DJ LeMahieu this week, so he’ll take Cabrera’s spot. Jorbit Vivas, who had been set to lose much of his playing time to LeMahieu, figures to continue to start for now, and Pablo Reyes will keep his roster spot.

No surprise here after Chisholm was lifted from Tuesday’s contest with right flank discomfort. The electrifying 27-year-old downplayed concern after the contest, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn’t willing to rule out a potential trip to the injured list. He’s slated to undergo further testing, including an MRI, on his right oblique prior to Friday’s series opener against the Rays. There should be an update on his status at some point in the coming days. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be journeyman Pablo Reyes filling in at the keystone on Wednesday night in his absence.
