Rangers re-signed RHP Joe Ross to a minor league contract.

Ross, 33, elected free agency on Wednesday rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side though and he’ll return to the Rangers on a minor league pact. He should get another opportunity with the big league club at some point this summer.

James Schiano highlights Dansby Swanson's offensive surge over the past 13 games with the Cubs, which includes nine homers, 29 RBIs, and a place in the history books.

Ross heads back to the open market in search of a new opportunity after passing through waivers unclaimed earlier this week. The well-traveled 33-year-old allowed allowed five runs over eight innings during five appearances for Texas after being called up back on June 13.

Ross loses his spot in the Rangers bullpen with Cameron Cauley and Chris Paddack being added to the club’s active roster. The 33-year-old journeyman allowed five runs over eight innings during five appearances for Texas after being called up back on June 13.

Ross joins the Rangers’ bullpen mix ahead of Saturday’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park just over three weeks after signing a minor league contract with the club. The well-traveled 33-year-old is merely a long relief option at this stage of his career, but he’s an experienced one, having made 163 appearances in the big leagues since 2015. He was hit extremely hard in three appearances for the Diamondbacks earlier this year.

Ross, 33, made three appearances in the big leagues with the Diamondbacks this season, posting a cringe-inducing 19.64 ERA, 3.00 WHIP and a 2/4 K/BB ratio over 3 2/3 innings of work. He’ll add extra pitching depth for the Rangers at the Triple-A level.
  • AZ Relief Pitcher #22
Ross finds himself back in the fold with Arizona as organizational depth after spending a couple days on the open market. The 32-year-old reliever was tagged for eight runs over 3 2/3 innings across three appearances for the Diamondbacks prior to being designated for assignment last Friday.

Ross cleared waivers over the weekend and will head out onto the open market to pursue opportunities elsewhere rather than stick around at Triple-A Reno. The 32-year-old reliever was lit up for eight runs over 3 2/3 innings across three appearances for Arizona prior to being designated for assignment last Friday.
  • AZ Relief Pitcher #22
Ross quickly loses his spot after giving up eight runs in 3 2/3 innings to begin the year. His velocity has been better than usual and he’s not making much more than minimum, so perhaps someone else will give him a look in middle relief.

Loáisiga looked like one of Arizona’s best relievers this spring, and he should be a part of the eighth- or ninth-inning mix right away. If he can just stay healthy, he might wind up leading the team in saves. Still, we’re talking about a 31-year-old who has only once topped 50 innings in the majors. He hasn’t made more than 30 appearances since 2022.

Ross bolsters Arizona’s middle relief depth after compiling a pedestrian 5.12 ERA — 6.08 xERA — 1.47 WHIP and 39/18 K/BB ratio across 51 innings for the Phillies last year. The 32-year-old journeyman has made 160 appearances (87 starts) in the majors since 2015.

Padres placed RHP Randy Vásquez on the 15-day injured list with a right ankle bruise.

Vásquez was injured when he took a comebacker off of his ankle during the first inning on Thursday. While he only sustained a bruise, it was going to cost him his next turn in the rotation, so the Padres made the wise decision to place him on the injured list and get a fresh arm added to their bullpen.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Friday that left-hander Connelly Early (elbow) will get a second opinion.

Tracy cautioned not to read too much into it and that most pitchers that are dealing with arm-related injuries do head for a second opinion. Early landed on the injured list earlier in the week due to what was termed posterior left elbow inflammation. The Red Sox should have another update on his status in a few days.

Ben Joyce (shoulder) faced live hitters on Friday for the first time since being shut down back in May.

It’s an encouraging development as the flame-throwing right-hander inches his way back towards a return to the Angels’ bullpen. Joyce is going to ultimately need several appearances in a minor league rehab assignment once he’s ready for a game setting, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could be ready to go before July is through.

Victor Robles (wrist) returned to the Mariners’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Blue Jays.

Robles was pulled early from Thursday’s game after he was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. Fortunately, he avoided any structural damage and just came away with a bruised wrist. He’s starting in center field and batting eighth against Blue Jays’ right-hander Dylan Cease on Friday evening in Seattle.

Iván Herrera went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, and one walk in 17-1 laugher against the Cubs on Friday.

Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast. The Cardinals scored multiple runs in every inning from the second to the sixth and Herrera was in the middle of most of those rallies. This was the second time this season he’s reached base four times in a single game and fourth time he’s scored three runs. It’s been a bit of a cold month power-wise for him with just three homers and a .349 slugging percentage over his past 30 days, but he remains one of the most productive catchers in the league.

Andre Pallante allowed five hits and one walk with two strikeouts across 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a win over the Cubs on Friday.

It’s very easy to pitch when your team puts up 17 runs like the Cardinals did here against David Peterson and the Cubs. Yet, Pallante still let his pitch count get a bit too high and Oli Marmol wouldn’t let him work through a two-out double in the sixth despite them having a 16-run lead. Nevertheless, Pallante was rarely squared up here and was able to be effective despite forcing just four swings-and-misses. Also, he became the fourth pitcher to join the 10-win club so far this season, joining Jacob Misiorowski, Chase Burns, and Justin Wrobleski. Now that’s a crew. Pallante will take a 3.60 ERA and 70 to 27 strikeout to walk ratio through 95 innings into his next scheduled start against the Brewers.

Alex Bregman went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Friday against the Cardinals.

There was little Bregman or any other member of the Cubs lineup could do after trailing by 11 runs by the time they came to bat in the fourth inning. Alas, Bregman is trying to get his season on track. His double was just his sixth extra-base hit since the beginning of June as he’s trapped in a power outage.

David Peterson allowed nine hits and 10 runs with three walks and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in an ugly loss to the Cardinals on Friday.

Peterson’s second start as a Cub did not go nearly as smoothly as his first. He allowed three runs apiece in each the second and third innings on his way to an ugly 10 spot. That rally in the second was the most frustrating because Peterson retired the first two batters he faced and had the Cardinals’ seven, eight, and nine hitters coming up. Suddenly, a double, single, and homer turned into three runs. Similarly, before being yanked in the fourth, he got two quick outs and then proceeded to walk three consecutive batters. Then he was pulled after a run-scoring single and reliever Bryse Wilson gave up a home run to let that last two inherited runners score. In the end, Peterson had poor command and was hit hard just like in many of his other starts this season.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Will Smith (neck) has resumed throwing and has been hitting in the batting cages.

It sounds like he’s making tangible strides in the right direction in his recovery from neck inflammation that has shelved him since early June. The Dodgers sound hopeful that he’ll be able to return shortly after the All-Star break. Dalton Rushing will continue to handle the bulk of the work behind the plate in his absence.

Max Scherzer (back) struggled in a minor league rehab start at High-A Vancouver on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits over his three innings of work.

Scherzer walked a pair while striking out three batters in the contest. He threw just 49 pitches in this one, so it’s likely that he’ll need another tune-up in the minor leagues before he’s cleared to rejoin the Blue Jays’ rotation. Either way, with what we have seen from Scherzer this season, he’s really not relevant from a mixed league perspective — especially if he can’t stay on the field.
