Giants place Matt Gage on IL with elbow strain

Muncy will take a seat with left-hander JP Sears toeing the slab for the Padres. Tommy Edman will cover the hot corner in his absence while Miguel Rojas starts at second base and will bat eighth for the Dodgers.

Ohtani sat out Saturday’s ballgame due to biceps discomfort. He felt considerably better after the day off though and is right back in there atop the Dodgers’ lineup for Sunday’s showdown against Padres’ left-hander JP Sears.

Jung was going to try to give it a go but tested his knee out on the field before the game and ultimately the decision was made to give him the afternoon off. It’s possible that he could be available in a pinch-hit situation. Ezequiel Duran will cover third base in his absence and bat cleanup against Tigers’ right-hander Casey Mize.

Canzone homered and drove in three runs on Saturday night, so the timing off the off day is a bit curious, though the Mariners are likely just trying to keep him fresh. Cal Raleigh will function as the team’s designated hitter in his place while Mitch Garver draws his first start of the week behind the dish and will bat seventh for the M’s against Trey Yesavage and the Blue Jays.

The hot-hitting outfielder will get at least a partial day off with left-hander Gage Jump toeing the slab for the Athletics. Don’t be surprised to see him make an appearance off the bench though. Liam Hicks will cover first base for the Marlins while Brian Navarreto draws a rare start behind the dish and will bat ninth for the Marlins.

It looks to be nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 35-year-old third baseman. Tim Tawa will start in his place at the hot corner and will bat seventh for the D’Backs against Brewers’ right-hander Brandon Sproat.

Buxton singled in the first inning and was caught trying to steal second base, which appears to have been where he sustained the injury. Hopefully it’s just a minor issue and the Twins are being cautious here, but with Buxton’s extensive injury history you just can’t rule out the chances of him heading to the injured list. Fantasy managers should have an alternative option in place for next week in the event that the dynamic 32-year-old outfielder is forced to miss some time.

He’ll take the place of left-hander Sean Sullivan who was optioned to Triple-A on Sunday. Shook, 28, holds a 4.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and a 3/0 K/BB ratio across 3 2/3 innings in three appearances out of the Rockies’ bullpen this season. He’ll function in a middle relief role.

Sullivan was lit up for six runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss against the Giants on Saturday. They’ll now swap him out for a fresh bullpen arm for Sunday’s series finale at Coors Field. The 23-year-old left-hander will continue to hone his craft at the Triple-A level until his services are needed once more.

Since he shoulders a very heavy workload for a catcher, the Brewers are careful to mix in off days for Contreras to get him off of his feet once in a while, with Sunday afternoon games being the most common. Gary Sanchez will start in his place behind the dish and bat seventh against Diamondbacks’ southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez.
