Wetherholt takes a seat after playing both games during Tuesday’s doubleheader at Busch Stadium. It’ll be José Fermín at second base with Masyn Winn moving up to the leadoff spot in his place. The 23-year-old rookie sensation is one of the most prominent omissions from next week’s All-Star Game. He’s put together an excellent first half, hitting .263/.358/.405 with 56 runs scored, 13 homers, 36 RBI and nine steals in 391 plate appearances through 86 games.

JJ Wetherholt went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk to lead the Cardinals to a 3-0 win over the Cubs on Saturday.

Wetherholt had an excellent day at the plate, starting with a solo homer off Shota Imanaga on the first pitch of the game. After drawing a walk in the third, he doubled in the fifth and knocked a base hit in the seventh before he was retired for the first time in the ninth. The 23-year-old second baseman is up to 13 homers, 52 runs scored, 36 RBI, and nine steals while hitting .266/.363/.415 across 375 plate appearances.

José Fermín went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk and three runs scored Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol seemed to want nothing to do with Fermín at the beginning of the season, as the utilityman had zero plate appearances through six games and two through 12 games. However, Fermín has been decent enough when given the chance to play, hitting .277/.328/.402 in 123 plate appearances. Fermín would likely be stretched thin as a regular, but as a part-timer, his ability to make contact and handle several positions is pretty useful.

Masyn Winn (thumb) has been added to the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks.

Winn is clearly feeling better and appears to have managed to talk his way into the lineup following a one-game absence due to left thumb soreness. His return pushes rookie standout JJ Wetherholt back to the keystone with Bryan Torres retreating to the bench.

There’s been no indication that Winn is a lock for the injured list after being scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with left thumb soreness. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into Thursday’s series finale at Busch Stadium. It’ll be rookie sensation JJ Wetherholt making his second straight start at shortstop in his absence.

It doesn’t sound like a significant concern since Winn was in the club’s initial lineup. The 24-year-old shortstop has been seeing the ball well recently, hitting .393 (11-for-28) with one homer and five RBI over his last seven games. It’ll be JJ Wetherholt taking over at shortstop in his absence.

Alec Burleson is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks.

Burleson usually gets to play against southpaws, but the Cardinals will give him a day off against Eduardo Rodriguez and the Arizona staff. Blaze Jordan will get the start at first base, and Jose Fermin will handle the hot corner while Burleson rests.

JJ Wetherholt went 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBI, and three runs scored as the Cardinals defeated the Royals 12-10 on Father’s Day.

This was a high-scoring game as Wetherholt’s second homer came in the second inning, putting St. Louis up 7-2 at the time. Each of his long balls came against Royals right-hander Stephen Kolek. The rookie infielder has been locked into the leadoff role this season, and he’s now hitting .268 with a .778 OPS. Still just 23 years old, Wetherholt has 12 homers and eight stolen bases through 324 big-league plate appearances.

Masyn Winn went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as the Cardinals defeated the Royals 12-10 on Sunday afternoon.

Winn’s homer was a three-run shot in the top of the first that gave St. Louis a 5-0 lead. The slick-fielding shortstop still hasn’t made an impact with the bat in the majors, as his wRC+ is below league average for the second straight campaign. Winn’s glove keeps him in the everyday lineup, but he hasn’t contributed much to the Cardinals’ surprisingly strong offensive start.

Masyn Winn went 3-for-5 with a double and scored a pair of runs as the Cardinals fell to the Royals on Thursday evening in Kansas City.

Winn smacked a two-out double in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI knock by Jose Fermin. He then started the seventh with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by Fermin. Winn also singled in the eighth. With his three-hit night, he’s now hitting .242/.321/.324 with just two home runs, 26 RBI and six swipes on the season.

JJ Wetherholt collected three singles, a walk and a steal in the Cardinals’ 3-2 defeat of the Padres on Tuesday.

No other player on either team had even two hits in this one. Wetherholt has gone 18-for-50 in his last 13 games to raise his average from .234 to .259. There’s a long way to go, but he’s pretty easily the NL Rookie of the Year favorite over Sal Stewart and Nolan McLean at this point.
