Griffin Canning strikes out five in defeat

Canning worked behind Wandy Peralta — who fired a scoreless inning before exiting — and while Canning does take the loss, it appeared to work. The right-hander was able to strike out four against two walks, and he was able to generate a respectable nine swings and misses over 73 pitches. Canning still has an unsightly 6.71 ERA, but he’ll get a chance to lower that Thursday in a scheduled appearance against the Diamondbacks. It seems awfully likely that one will be working behind an opener, too.

Canning will enter the contest after lefty opener Wandy Peralta tangles with the top of the Los Angeles order. The 30-year-old holds a lackluster 7.09 ERA across 47 innings this season in his San Diego debut.

Canning gave up five hits, walked two and struck out three. After he recorded just two outs in his last start, the Padres couldn’t have asked Canning for much more against the Cubs on Monday. He has a 7.09 ERA after all. Canning is lined up to face the Dodgers on the road this weekend. He can be safely ignored in fantasy leagues at this point in his career.

Canning only recorded two outs in his last start, so it was unclear when he would get the ball next. The Padres announced that Canning, JP Sears, and Walker Buehler would be the three starters for their series against the Cubs. We’d prefer to avoid all three in fantasy leagues if possible.

Wandy Peralta had started the game as the opener for the Padres. He tossed a scoreless inning, then handed it over to Canning. Canning then surrendered four runs and recorded just two outs before he was ultimately pulled. The team would’ve undoubtedly wanted to get more out of Canning, but had to turn the game into a full bullpen game. Kyle Hart followed with one run allowed over two innings. Canning ends the day with a 7.38 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and a 43/26 K/BB ratio across 42 2/3 innings.

It’ll be Wandy Peralta getting the nod as San Diego’s opener with Canning to follow in a bulk role. The 30-year-old limited the Cardinals to just one run over 4 1/3 innings behind an opener his last time out. The decision is a slight boost to his fantasy appeal as it gives him better odds of lasting into the middle innings and qualifying for a win.

His ERA now sits at 6.64, and his role in the San Diego rotation is up in the air with Germán Márquez possibly back from the IL next time through. Canning’s start would come at home against the Braves if he winds up making it.

They added another pair in the second before Gunnar Henderson swatted a solo homer in the fourth. Canning generated eight swings and misses on 93 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 32 percent. He now sports an unsightly 7.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and a 39/22 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings in eight starts with the Padres this season. He’ll try once again to earn his first victory when he takes on the Cardinals in St. Louis on Wednesday.

Canning tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a run on a walk and two hits in the second. He settled in nicely, going three more scoreless frames, leaving after five with six strikeouts. It was Canning’s best start since giving up one run over five innings in his first start of the season on May 3. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 6.34 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and a 33/17 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings into a start against the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday.

Canning struck out three and walked two. His ERA on the year is an unsightly 7.16, but 12 of those runs came in two of his first three starts since returning from last year’s Achilles injury. Canning has responded with three straight starts where he’s allowed exactly three earned runs. His estimators say he hasn’t been as bad as his ERA suggests, but he still isn’t a recommended fantasy option going forward. He’ll face his former team, the Mets, in his next start.
