Griffin Canning allows just one run, still takes loss

Canning gave up five hits, walked two and struck out four. He fell to 1-8 with the loss. Canning’s day got off to a rough start as he allowed a two-run home run to Lane Thomas in the first inning. He also allowed single runs in the third and fourth inning. Canning has a 6.67 ERA in 11 starts. He’s off the fantasy radar for his start on the road against the Braves next week.

Canning struck out five and walked none, but the D-backs got to him for single runs in the fourth and fifth and the Padres offense failed to respond. Canning ends the first half 1-7 with a 6.47 ERA, so he could be bumped from the rotation if the Padres rotation gets healthier and/or if A.J. Preller can make an addition or two.

Canning will enter the contest after lefty opener Wandy Peralta tangles with the top of the Los Angeles order. The 30-year-old holds a lackluster 7.09 ERA across 47 innings this season in his San Diego debut.

He has a 7.09 ERA after all. Canning is lined up to face the Dodgers on the road this weekend. He can be safely ignored in fantasy leagues at this point in his career.

Canning only recorded two outs in his last start, so it was unclear when he would get the ball next. The Padres announced that Canning, JP Sears, and Walker Buehler would be the three starters for their series against the Cubs. We’d prefer to avoid all three in fantasy leagues if possible.

Wandy Peralta had started the game as the opener for the Padres. He tossed a scoreless inning, then handed it over to Canning. Canning then surrendered four runs and recorded just two outs before he was ultimately pulled. The team would’ve undoubtedly wanted to get more out of Canning, but had to turn the game into a full bullpen game. Kyle Hart followed with one run allowed over two innings. Canning ends the day with a 7.38 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and a 43/26 K/BB ratio across 42 2/3 innings.

It’ll be Wandy Peralta getting the nod as San Diego’s opener with Canning to follow in a bulk role. The 30-year-old limited the Cardinals to just one run over 4 1/3 innings behind an opener his last time out. The decision is a slight boost to his fantasy appeal as it gives him better odds of lasting into the middle innings and qualifying for a win.

Canning struck out two while walking three and allowing four hits on the afternoon. His ERA now sits at 6.64, and his role in the San Diego rotation is up in the air with Germán Márquez possibly back from the IL next time through. Canning’s start would come at home against the Braves if he winds up making it.

Canning also issued five walks on the evening while striking out six. The Orioles got to him early in this one, as Samuel Basallo blasted a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning. They added another pair in the second before Gunnar Henderson swatted a solo homer in the fourth. Canning generated eight swings and misses on 93 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 32 percent. He now sports an unsightly 7.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and a 39/22 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings in eight starts with the Padres this season. He’ll try once again to earn his first victory when he takes on the Cardinals in St. Louis on Wednesday.

Canning tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a run on a walk and two hits in the second. He settled in nicely, going three more scoreless frames, leaving after five with six strikeouts. It was Canning’s best start since giving up one run over five innings in his first start of the season on May 3. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 6.34 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and a 33/17 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings into a start against the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday.
