Aaron Nola had a tough time keeping the ball in the yard during Thursday night’s loss to the Orioles, giving up three runs on six hits across his six-plus innings of work.

Nola racked up six strikeouts on the night while issuing four free passes. All of the damage that was done against him came via the long ball, with Francisco Alvarez crushing a solo homer in the third inning then Brett Baty and Alvarez going back-to-back to open the seventh. Nola got 16 swings and misses on 97 pitches on the evening, posting a strong CSW of 35 percent. He’ll carry a 5.68 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 108/35 K/BB ratio (103 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Dodgers.

Nola struck out one batter in the abbreviated outing. All of the damage done against him came in the opening inning as Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson worked back-to-back walks with one out. Michael Harris II followed with a three-run blast that gave the Braves the early lead. Nola got just three whiffs on 38 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 21 percent. The 33-year-old hurler will now have to go through an entire offseason with the bad taste from this one in his mouth.

Philadelphia mounted a surreal comeback with Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper homering in the eighth inning to essentially force extra-innings before Alec Bohm’s go-ahead homer kept their season alive. Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola are the most logical candidates, but they could decide to give the ball to lefty Jesús Luzardo as an opener after he went five innings during Game 1 earlier this week. It’ll be an all-hands-on-deck situation regardless of who takes the ball to kick off the winner-take-all affair.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
Nola was tasked with starting essentially a must-win game for the Phillies on two-days rest, and it went poorly. He gave up a two-run homer to Junior Caminero, and an RBI double to Victor Mesa before giving way to the bullpen. Nola’s regular season was another down year for what was once one of the better starters in the National League, and he finishes with a 4.67 ERA in his 175 1/3 innings. Assuming there’s no buyout or trade, he’ll pitch at the back of the Philadelphia rotation in 2027.

It’s basically no-or-never for the Phillies as they sit one game ahead of the Diamondbacks for the final NL Wild Card playoff spot with two games remaining. Nola gets the ball on two days of rest after allowing four runs over six innings in a loss to the Brewers on Wednesday evening. The 33-year-old was unlikely to pitch in a potential Wild Card Series matchup, so they’re going to have him take the ball in this spot instead. It’s a massive spot as Philadelphia attempts to snap a three-game losing streak and clinch a playoff spot.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
Nola struck out eight, but he gave up solo homers in the first and second and then two runs on a walk, a single and a double in the third. He retired 10 straight from there to end his outing. Nola closes out the regular season 7-11 with a 4.54 ERA, though that doesn’t demonstrate how solid he’s been lately. He had a 2.10 ERA in his previous 10 starts coming into tonight. This was the first time he’s allowed four runs since July 22.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
The 33-year-old right-hander scattered three singles and three walks on the night while striking out four. The only real threat against him came as the Mets put two men on with one out in the sixth inning, but he was able to get Francisco Lindor to bounce into an inning-ending double play to quell that rally. Nola generated nine swings and misses on 81 offerings in the contest, posting a strong CSW of 32 percent. He’ll look to further improve upon his 4.49 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in his regular season finale against the Brewers on Wednesday.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
Nola gave up a homer to Matt Olson in the first and another to Austin Riley in the second, but the Braves did nothing else against him, even though he finished the night with just two strikeouts and three walks. It’s the sixth straight start in which Nola has allowed two runs or fewer, and though he wasn’t involved in the decision tonight, he’s improved from 3-9 with a 5.61 ERA to 7-9 with a 4.69 ERA. He’ll get the Mets next week.

Nola punched out five batters in the contest while allowing only one base on balls. The lone tally against him came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ronald Acuña Jr. in the sixth inning. Nola exited with a 4-1 lead and in line for a victory, but the Phillies’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. The 33-year-old hurler got 11 whiffs on 93 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 22 percent. He’ll look to continue his resurgence and further improve upon his 4.76 ERA and 1.37 WHIP when he takes on these same Braves in Atlanta on Friday.

The scoring was finished in the third inning in this one, allowing Nola to get the victory in a game in which he recorded just 15 outs, He’s yielded exactly one run in four of his last seven starts and a total of 11 runs during the span, which has lowered his ERA from 5.82 to 4.93. He’s a pretty reasonable mixed-league option right now, though a matchup against the Braves on Sunday isn’t quite ideal.

Nola tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a leadoff homer to Cal Raleigh in the second. He cruised through another three quiet innings before the Mariners added a run on two hits in the sixth. Nola would complete the frame and end his day at 92 pitches, striking out seven in a quality start. The 33-year-old right-hander will take a 5.03 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 153/49 K/BB ratio across 143 innings into a start against the Diamondbacks in Arizona next Monday.

Braves manager Walt Weiss said Ronald Acuña Jr. might not play in Wednesday’s Game 4 against the Dodgers because of right knee soreness.

Acuña left the ballpark without talking to the media after going 0-for-3 with a walk as a DH in Game 3. If he can’t play Wednesday, the Braves will probably start Ha-Seong Kim at shortstop and Mauricio Dubón in the outfield against Tyler Glasnow.

Freddie Freeman launched a solo homer to propel the Dodgers to a 3-1 win over the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

After having a potential go-ahead homer robbed by Braves left fielder Mauricio Dubón earlier in the contest, Freeman ensured that his next fly ball wouldn’t be caught, tattooing a 399-foot moonshot to right-center field off Atlanta ace Chris Sale to give Los Angeles a three-run advantage in the fourth inning. It was his second round-tripper of the playoffs and 18th career postseason big fly since 2012. The 37-year-old ageless wonder recorded three batted balls with exit velocities over 101 mph against his former team in this one, but only came away with one hit to show for it. The Dodgers have an opportunity to punch their ticket back to the NLCS with a win in Game 4 of the best-of-five series at Truist Park on Wednesday evening.

Drake Baldwin went 0-for-4 with an RBI in a loss to the Dodgers during Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

Baldwin supplied Atlanta’s lone run against Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto when he delivered a bases-loaded ground out in the fifth inning. He struck out twice and finished hitless in four at-bats. The Braves will attempt to even the best-of-five series when they host Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Enrique Hernández walloped a two-run homer against the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

Apparently, Hernández isn’t finished etching his name into Dodgers postseason lore. The 35-year-old veteran took Atlanta ace Chris Sale deep in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless stalemate. It was his first round-tripper of the playoffs and 17th career home run across 105 career postseason contests.

Tanner Scott fired a scoreless eighth inning against the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

It was encouraging to see Scott rebound with a pair of strikeouts in a shutout frame after a tough outing in the series opener over the weekend where he served up a two-run homer to Ozzie Albies. It didn’t end up costing Los Angeles, but it was an auspicious start to the postseason for one of the club’s key high-leverage arms. He recorded two quick outs before working out a two-out walk to Ronald Acuña Jr. by striking out slugger Matt Olson to escape with the lead intact.

Edwin Díaz twirled a scoreless ninth inning to pick up a save against the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

It was fairly stunning to see Dodgers manager Dave Roberts turn to Díaz in a massive spot, asking him to preserve a two-run lead on the road at Trust Park, following an injury-plagued and ineffective regular season. He immediately served up a leadoff double to Ozzie Albies, which brought the potential game-tying run to the plate. He managed to settle down and retire both Michael Harris II and Mauricio Dubón before getting pinch-hitter Mike Yastrzemski to ground out, thanks to a brilliant defensive play by shortstop Mookie Betts. It’s fair to assume that Díaz will continue to receive opportunities to close as the Dodgers continue their postseason run. This was his first save since August 14.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed one run over seven innings against the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

Yamamoto has repeatedly found another gear when the postseason demands it, and he authored another masterpiece at Truist Park to put Los Angeles back in the metaphorical driver’s seat in the best-of-five series as they pursue their third consecutive World Series title. It was the first double-digit strikeout performance of his playoff career, and he allowed just five baserunners while needing an economical 98 pitches (62 strikes) to navigate seven impressive frames. The Dodgers grabbed an early lead on homers by Enrique Hernández and Freddie Freeman, while Yamamoto carried a shutout into the fifth inning before Atlanta finally broke through on a bases-loaded groundout by Drake Baldwin. He escaped the jam without further damage by coaxing a harmless ground ball from Ronald Acuña Jr. to extinguish the threat. He’ll presumably be available out of the bullpen for the final two games, should the Dodgers require his heroics.

Chris Sale recorded seven strikeouts and surrendered three runs over five innings against the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday.

Sale wriggled out of a first-inning jam by punching out Shohei Ohtani on a nasty slider and piled up six punchouts over three shutout frames to open the contest. He ran into trouble in the fourth when postseason hero Enrique Hernández slugged a two-run shot to left field before former Braves icon Freddie Freeman took him deep to right-center field, an absolutely stunning turn of events for the veteran ace after allowing just 10 homers across 162 2/3 regular-season innings. It was the first time he served up multiple home runs in a postseason outing since his playoff debut back in 2017. He returned to toss a perfect fifth inning before departing after 95 pitches (62 strikes), with Atlanta manager Walt Weiss turning to his bullpen to open the sixth. It’s a virtual lock that Sale will get the ball again at some point, most likely in relief, as the best-of-five series continues.

Miguel Rojas was removed from Game 3 of the NLDS against the Braves with lower back pain.

It doesn’t sound like a massive concern, but back issues can be a complicated matter, especially without additional downtime and significant travel during the postseason. Rojas was lifted during the eighth inning of Game 3 in Atlanta after going 0-for-3 at the dish. He’s presumably day-to-day for the remainder of the series.

Wandy Peralta has been added to the Padres’ roster for Game 3 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Tuesday.

Peralta takes over Mason Miller’s vacated roster spot while the elite closer is away from the club on paternity leave. The 35-year-old lefty compiled a respectable 3.61 ERA across 77 1/3 innings of work during the regular season.
