Carson Benge went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to propel the Mets past the Padres 4-2 on Wednesday.

Benge didn’t have the chance to throw out anyone on the bases today, so he had to find some other way to help the Mets win. The homer was his 15th of the year. Four of them have come while he’s hit .311 in 16 games this month.

Robert Stock kept the Padres to one run and two hits in 4 1/3 innings in his start Wednesday.

Stock struck out six and walked three before departing. He’s pitched a total of 16 2/3 innings in his four starts this month, but he’s been effective in three of them. His next turn will come next Wednesday against the Brewers, though with two off days coming up, the Mets could push him back.

Kodai Senga recorded his fourth save after allowing one run in the ninth Wednesday against the Padres.

Senga got into big trouble in the ninth, allowing three straight to reach with one out, but the Padres then made the baffling decision to have Austin Hays bat for Sung-Mun Song, and Hays, who last collected a hit against a right-hander on May 1, grounded into game-ending double play. The run Senga allowed was the first he’s given up in six appearances this month.

Michael King pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball Wednesday in a loss to the Mets.

King departed with the Mets up 2-1 in the seventh. He has been far and away the Padres’ best starter, yet after losing today, the team is now 11-15 in his outings, compared to 57-45 the rest of the time. King himself is 8-9 with a 3.38 ERA. He’ll face the Pirates next week.

Manny Machado went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as the Padres’ designated hitter Wednesday against the Mets.

Between the DHing and the striking out, Machado needed to run just one time today, but he couldn’t even do that, barely making it halfway down the line while being retired on his double play ball. Machado’s strikeout rate currently stands at 22 percent. While that’s right at the league average, it’s quite a bit higher than his career mark of 17.5 percent. His highest mark previously was 20.7 percent in 2022.

Jacob deGrom (triceps) will start Thursday’s series finale against the Nationals.

It’s the best-case scenario after deGrom was lifted from his previous start against the Angels after two innings with triceps fatigue. The 38-year-old former fantasy ace made it through a bullpen session earlier this week and will take the ball without missing any additional time. The Rangers are probably going to handle his workload with an abundance of caution, but he’s worth starting in nearly all fantasy leagues until further notice.
