Brieske has been knocked around in his four appearances with the Tigers this season, posting a 12.46 ERA, 2.31 WHIP and a 4/4 K/BB ratio over 4 1/3 innings. He’ll look to get back on track at the Triple-A level. Jacob Waguespack was promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move on Friday.

Brieske had been sidelined since late in spring training due to a left adductor strain. He’ll give a floundering Tigers’ bullpen another fresh arm for their weekend series against the White Sox in Chicago.

Brieske will be on the shelf until at least late May after suffering a groin injury earlier this week. The 27-year-old righty holds a pedestrian 4.14 ERA (4.33 xERA), 1.29 ERA and 170/79 K/BB ratio across 206 1/3 innings over 108 appearances in the big leagues since 2022.

Brieske was only able to throw three pitches for leaving the contest. The right-hander was unable to go Thursday because of soreness in his side, and this appears to be a continuation. It seems like Brieske will undergo imaging before determining the next steps.

It’s the second time that Brieske has dealt with injuries in the Grapefruit League, as the 27-year-old was held out of Thursday’s game against Baltimore because of side soreness. He was only able to throw three pitches before exiting. The 27-year-old should have an update on his status shortly.

The right-hander sustained the minor injury during pitcher’s fielding practice. Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch noted that it’s not believed to be anything serious and shouldn’t impact Brieske’s ability to be ready in time for the start of the regular season.

Brieske was not terribly effective in 2025 with a 6.55 ERA before being sent down to Toledo, and then missed the rest of the season with a right forearm strain. The 27-year-old right-hander will compete for a low-leverage spot in the Detroit bullpen come Grapefruit League season.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 27-year-old hurler — he’s out for the season — this was merely done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the Tigers’ 40-man roster for the addition of José Urquidy on Friday.
