Tyler Wells allowed one walk, one hit, and struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save on Friday against the Astros.

It got a little stressful, but Wells found a way to dig deep and secure this save. First, Yordan Alvarez came up with the tying run on base and Wells forced him to hit a comically high pop-up. Afterwards, he walked Isaac Paredes to push the tying run into scoring position, but struck Christian Walker out after a seven-pitch battle to end it. Wells has been excellent in relief this season with a 2.96 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 26% strikeout rate, and a true four-pitch mix that’s stuck with him since he was a starter. He’s a capable closer, just be advised that Andrew Kittredge has saved a handful of games as well and it’s likely these two share this job moving forward.

Tyler Wells tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the win against the Rangers on Saturday.

With Bryan Baker unavailable with an illness on Saturday, Wells got the call to pitch the ninth in a tie game against the Rangers. He worked around a fielding error to hold Texas off the board and take the game to extras. After Tampa Bay took a three-run lead, he closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts to fall in line for the win.

Tyler Wells let an inherited runner score during the ninth inning to secure the save on Friday against the Rangers.

The ninth inning in this one became a bit of a fiasco when the league-leader in saves, Bryan Baker walked the first two batters before being pulled with an injury. Wells came in to clean up the mess and did so after a sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, and pop-up. He earned a handful of saves earlier this season with the Orioles and even grabbed one last week after Baker needed a second day off after working three games in a row. If Baker needs to miss any time, expect Wells to be the Rays’ closer.

Tyler Wells pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn a save in a 3-0 win over the Tigers on Wednesday.

Rays closer Bryan Baker was also off on Tuesday, but he had thrown three days in a row prior to that, so the team was likely being cautious with their closer. Baker has an MLB-leading 38 saves, so there is no controversy here. What is worth noting is that Kevin Kelly had not pitched in the last two days, but he was used for two innings in this game, which allowed Wells to get the chance to close out his fifth save of the season.

Rays acquired RHP Tyler Wells from the Orioles for RHP Michael Forret.

Wells bolsters Tampa Bay’s relief depth heading into the home stretch after thriving as a full-time reliever with the division-rival Orioles this season, posting a solid 2.67 ERA across 54 innings of work. He’s an interesting pickup for the Rays, who have had plenty of success with turning unheralded names into elite relievers in the recent past.

The Rays had so much success with Bryan Baker that they’re going back to the Orioles for another unheralded reliever. Wells has made the transition to a full-time relief role appear seamless, notching four saves to go along with a 2.67 ERA across 54 innings of work. This qualifies as a savvy pickup for the Rays to bolster their late-inning equation.

Wells needed just 10 pitches to get through the inning and secure the 6-4 victory for the Orioles. Wells was a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities for the Orioles this month and posted a 1.10 ERA over 16.1 innings of work in July.

Andrew Kittredge recorded a one-out save in the 12th to secure Wednesday’s 10-9 win over the Tigers.

The Orioles are up to nine saves in July, three of which belong to Kittredge. Tyler Wells also has three, and he pitched two scoreless innings in Wednesday’s thriller. The other three saves are spread across three different relievers, so this looks like a true committee led by Wells and Kittredge. That makes it difficult to roster either of them in standard mixed leagues, but perhaps more clarity will arrive after Monday’s trade deadline.

Rico Garcia tossed a perfect ninth inning against the Tigers on Monday to record his fifth save of the season.

Garcia got the call to protect a three-run lead in the final frame after Andrew Kittredge worked a scoreless eighth inning. He needed just 17 pitches (10 strikes) to dispatch the Tigers and preserve the win. He struck out Matt Vierling and Kevin McGonigle before getting Dillon Dingler to pop out in foul territory to end it. Garcia should continue factoring into Baltimore’s late-inning mix along with Kittredge and Tyler Wells while Ryan Helsley (elbow) is on the injured list.

Tyler Wells threw a scoreless 10th inning on Sunday against the Braves as the Orioles lost 3-2 in 11.

Wells allowed one walk but worked around it. The righty has three saves in July but only one of the team’s past five. He’s part of a closer-by-committee with Ryan Helsley sidelined. If he starts consolidating ninth-inning chances over the season’s final two months, it would do wonders for his fantasy viability.

Tyler Wells took a loss to the Red Sox on Monday after giving up a go-ahead homer in the eighth.

Wells retired four of the five batters he faced in the seventh and eighth, striking out three of them, but with two outs in the eighth, Caleb Durbin took him out to left to break a 5-5 tie. It was Wells’ third appearances in four days, so he’ll almost certainly be out of the mix on Tuesday. That increases the chances of an Andrew Kittredge save chance.

The Nationals announced that Riley Cornelio will open on Sunday, with no mention of Irvin being scratched for any reason, so the expectation is that he’ll function in a bulk role. The 29-year-old right-hander remains a middling streaming option, though his chances of earning a victory improve slightly in a bulk role.

Strahm sustained the injury during the World Baseball Classic and tried to pitch through it during his time with the Royals, struggling to a 7.32 ERA over 41 appearances. He’s expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2027 season. When healthy, Strahm has proven to be a capable setup man, which should give him plenty of suitors on the open market over the winter.

Although X-rays came back negative, Joc Pederson is expected to meet with a hand specialist on Sunday after getting hit by a pitch on Saturday.

Pederson had his hand in a plastic brace after the game Saturday. He was hit in the same area in which he suffered a fractured wrist last season. It may sound like bad luck, but it’s really Pederson’s own doing from crowding the plate. Last year’s HBP came on a pitch that was a little high but was over the strike zone. The HBP tonight came on a pitch that was maybe three inches inside. If Pederson did escape another significant injury, it’s at least good timing on his part. The Rangers are set to face left-handers in each of their next three games, meaning Pederson was likely to be out of the starting lineup anyway.

It’s their largest ever margin of victory, overtaking a 19-2 win over the Rangers in 1994. The five-RBI game is a first for Young. He’d hit just .167/.267/.266 with four RBI in his previous 23 games.

Jump said he felt the tightness while warming up for the outing. His average fastball velocity was down 2.6 mph over the two innings, and it’s pretty obvious he never should have taken the mound in the first place. Even if this proves to be nothing significant, there’s no way the A’s should let the 23-year-old make another start this season.

Making just his second start since being called up, Michael Arroyo went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and a walk Saturday against the A’s.

Arroyo went 0-for-3 last Sunday and then was out of the lineup for four games before getting the nod at DH tonight. One would think this performance would earn him more time against lefties. Yes, pretty much everyone on the Mariners had a nice game tonight, but Arroyo exceeding 100 mph on four of his five balls in play is still quite impressive.
