Nightengale: White Sox interested in Clay Holmes

Roberts said before the game that Ohtani still isn’t feeling 100 percent physically due to ongoing knee and biceps issues, and that if any other player was dealing with those same ailments the club wouldn’t let them pitch either. What has yet to be determined is whether or not the Dodgers will shut Ohtani down from pitching for the remainder of the season. They’re going to see how he feels when they return to Los Angeles next week before making that determination.

He’ll repeat the exercise once again early next week while the team is in Boston before potentially advancing to facing live hitters. While there’s still no timeline, he’s at least making strides toward a return to the Mariners’ bullpen at some point in September.

Bennett fanned seven and walked none in the gem. It’s his fourth scoreless start of at least six innings in his 16 turns for the Red Sox. He’s over his previous career high for innings and his velocity is down a little, but by limiting the walks and homers, he’s still more than holding his own. He’ll take a 9-6 record and a 3.27 ERA into his next start against the Orioles.

Rodón looked very good while allowing one run and throwing 61 pitches through four, but his defense let him down in the fifth and he seemed to let his frustrations get the best of him while walking Eli White and plunking Jahmai Jones to load the bases with two outs. Yerry De los Santos took over then and got Ceddanne Rafaela to fly out to end the threat. Rodón ended up throwing 86 pitches, which is right where the Yankees wanted him after 66 pitches in his return from the IL and 76 pitches last time out. He’s yet to complete five innings since coming back from elbow inflammation, but with any luck, that will happen next time out versus the Padres.

Rutschman had one hard-hit ball today, but that was actually the out. His three singles — two liners and a flyball into no man’s land — all left the bat at 74-80 mph. It’s his first three-hit and second multi-RBI game for Boston. He’s hitting .184/.273/.265 for his new team.

Lombard’s streak of six straight games with an error mercifully ended Friday, but it hasn’t resulted in an offensive turnaround yet; he’s 5-for-33 with one RBI and 13 strikeouts in his last nine games, leaving him at .247/.306/.364 in 22 games overall. The Yankees will stick with him, but he might be due for a day off; he’s been in the lineup every game since he was called up.

While the expectation was that Whisenhunt would undergo the traditional Tommy John reconstructive surgery, he’ll undergo a different procedure that could shave some time off of what’s still going to be a lengthy recovery. He’s traveling to Arizona on Sunday to undergo the procedure.

McGonigle’s 371-foot fly off Jack Dreyer would have been an out under normal circumstances, but the Dodgers’ outfield was playing in with the winning run on third. McGonigle deserved that after his bid for a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning Friday was denied by Comerica; that flyout, hit 403 feet off Alex Vesia, would have been a homer in 20 ballparks, according to Statcast. McGonigle also walked twice today, but the hit to end the contest was his first in four games.

Montero allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings before giving up a double and a pair of singles to the four batters he faced in the sixth. That tied the game up, but at least Tyler Holton was able to strand both inherited runners after taking over with one out. Montero was pitching on 10 days’ rest after his arm didn’t bounce back per usual following his last start. He was obviously just fine today; his velocity was even up a tad, and he got 16 outs on just 73 pitches. Assuming that all is well after this one, he’ll likely make his next start in a doubleheader versus the Guardians on Friday.

Sears took over in a tie game in the seventh and helped keep it 1-1 into the ninth. The left-hander was making his second big-league appearance after being called up and pitching in a bulk role last Sunday. He’s still stretched out to start, but with Keider Montero back and no extra starter needed, he might be exchanged for a fresh arm after this.
