Alejandro Osuna collects three hits, three RBI

Osuna drew a walk and scored a run in the second inning before coming through in a big spot for the Rangers. With two runners on and a two-run lead in the eighth, he extended the Texas lead with a three-run blast off Sam Bachman for his first home run of the season. The 23-year-old outfielder is hitting .252/.343/.296 with 20 runs scored and 18 RBI across 182 plate appearances.

Osuna had started every game this week in left field, so he’ll get a breather for Sunday’s tilt against the Tigers. Josh Smith will start in his place and will bat seventh for the Rangers against right-hander Casey Mize.

Nimmo has a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, and there’s a chance the 33-year-old will require a stint on the injured list. For now, he’s on the bench and likely unavailable for Tuesday’s contest. Alejandro Osuna is in the lineup in Nimmo’s place.

This is Osuna’s first start at first base since 2022, so the Rangers are clearly looking for ways that he can get back onto the MLB roster even with Wyatt Langfors healthy. At 5'9" 185 pounds, Osuna isn’t a prototypical first baseman, but if he can be good enough there to play one or two games a week and then also play a game or two in the outfield, that could be valuable for the Rangers. The 23-year-old has a great understanding of the strike zone and slashed .253/.376/.275 with zero homers, nine RBI, and four stolen bases in 110 plate appearances with the Rangers so far this season.

Osuna gets the call to join the Rangers in a bench role with Wyatt Langford (forearm) hitting the shelf. The 23-year-old corner outfielder got into 63 games as a rookie last year and has the look and feel of a reserve outfielder long-term.

Technically, the move isn’t official, but Langford told reporters he’s headed to the shelf after undergoing an MRI that revealed the forearm strain. The 24-year-old outfielder was lifted from Tuesday’s game against the Pirates with forearm tightness. He told reporters that he only expects to miss 10 days. We’ll see. Alejandro Osuna is coming up from Triple-A Round Rock to take his roster spot with Ezequiel Duran likely to see more time in left field during his absence.

Osuna and Helman come up short on bids to break camp in the big leagues with the Rangers going with Ezequiel Duran and Andrew McCutchen in reserve roles. Osuna got into 63 games as a rookie last year and has the look of a reserve outfielder. Helman is a gritty jack-of-all-trades utility specialist with plenty of defensive versatility. He should get another look in the near future.
