Nick Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored as the Pirates topped the Yankees 5-3 in 10 innings in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

The third run came in the 10th, as Gonzales was the automatic runner after grounding out to end the ninth. He came around to score on a Jared Triolo single, and the Pirates added on with another RBI single from Jake Mangum. Prior to that, Gonzales singled and scored on Jacob Gonzalez’s homer in the fifth and then delivered a solo shot off Gerrit Cole in the seventh inning. It’s the second time in his career that he’s scored three runs in a game. He’s hitting .311/.370/.414 with six homers over 395 plate appearances. That average is 54 points better than his career mark of .257 in 923 plate appearances coming into the season.

Jake Mangum was scratched from the lineup for the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Yankees with right foot discomfort.

Mangum went 2-for-5 with an RBI and his 19th stolen base of the season during the front-end of the twin bill. He’ll undergo further evaluation and there should be an update on his status prior to Friday’s series opener against the Cubs. The 30-year-old has emerged as Pittsburgh’s primary leadoff hitter since rookie Konnor Griffin hit the injured list earlier this month. It’ll be Billy Cook taking over in center field with Nick Gonzales moving up to the leadoff spot.

Nick Gonzales went 3-for-5 with a homer and an RBI single as the Pirates beat the Phillies 6-1 on Thursday.

He took Kyle Backhus deep in the ninth inning to extend a 5-1 lead, on a breaking ball that he just nudged over the left-field fence in Citizen’s Bank Park. Gonzales just keeps hitting -- he’s batting .322 in his last 30 games -- and while he isn’t generating a ton of speed, he’s got four homers over that span to go along with 22 runs scored and 16 RBI. Gonzales remains a fringe starter in most leagues, but if he’s going to hit this well going forward there are going to be fantasy teams he can help.

Nick Gonzales finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk Wednesday against the Phillies.

Gonzales didn’t have a very good night in the field at third base, but he did single three times off Zack Wheeler to help make up for it. He’s batting an even .300 on the year and doing it mostly with singles; just 15 of his 90 hits have gone for extra bases and his isolated slugging percentage is .073, down from a career mark of .118.

Pirates activated SS Konnor Griffin from the 10-day injured list.

After nearly four weeks away due to a forearm strain, Griffin starting at shortstop and leading off in Friday’s game against the Reds. His return means that Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo will go back to fighting for time at third. Gonzales figures to get most of the starts, but he is sitting in favor of Triolo tonight.

Nick Gonzales went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run homer against the Rockies on Sunday.

The homer off Michael Lorenzen was just Gonzales’s third of the season, but his .293/.342/.374 line is solid, and even without a lot of power, he has 35 RBI in 73 games. In fact, he has more RBI and runs scored (40) in 292 plate appearances this year than he did in 408 plate appearances last year (30 RBI, 39 runs scored).

Nick Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored on Saturday against the Braves.

One fire lately, two more knocks here extended Gonzales’ hitting streak to eight games with multiple hits in four of those. His fourth inning double helped catalyze the only real rally the Pirates had in this game and he’s now up to a .315 batting average and .759 OPS on the season as an everyday player for the Pirates.

Nick Gonzales went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored as the Pirates defeated the Twins 9-3 on Sunday afternoon.

The homer was his first of the year, a two-run shot off Zebby Matthews that put Pittsburgh up 4-0 in the third. Gonzales has been operating as the team’s primary third baseman, having started 14 of their past 15 games. He’s hit as high as fourth this week, but Ryan O’Hearn’s return dropped him to fifth on Sunday. For fantasy purposes, he’s mostly provided empty batting average given his unique .303/.356/.364 slash line.

Gonzales made an early exit from Thursday’s series finale due to discomfort stemming from a ball that he fouled off his knee earlier this week that was still bothering him. It doesn’t sound like a significant concern, but he’ll likely undergo imaging to rule out any structural damage. There should be an update on his status ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Twins.

Oneil Cruz is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays.

Cruz takes a seat with Toronto lefty Patrick Corbin toeing the rubber. It’ll be intriguing prospect Jhostynxon Garcia getting a chance in center field with Nick Gonzales moving up to the leadoff spot. Cruz is hitting .303 (20-for-66) with four homers against lefties this season. However, he’s been struggling a bit of late, hitting just .242 (15-for-62) with one homer and 26 strikeouts over his last 15 games.

Brice Turang went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Milwaukee’s loss to the Rockies on Friday.

Turang golfed a 434-foot moonshot off Tomoyuki Sugano in the sixth inning, and the Rockies were lucky his first-inning single had no launch because it was 109 mph off the bat. Turang has been incredible through his first 97 games of the season, hitting .265/.361/.463 with 15 homers and 15 stolen bases. Fantasy managers would probably love it if he ran as much as he did in 2024 and 2025, but the extra power — he’s three away from last year’s career high 18 bombs — certainly helps.

He got Christian Yelich to softly fly out to right field to end the game. The ride is always bumpy, but the saves Romano does get look the same in the box score even if they come with an inflated WHIP and ERA.

He struck out five and both runs allowed came off solo home runs to Christian Yelich and Brice Turang. There’s not much mystique to Sugano at this stage of the season -- he throws the full kitchen sink and tops out at 94 between three different fastballs. His 27 percent whiff rate here was well above his season average of 17 percent. Sugano draws a Coors Field start next week against the Royals, assuming he’s not traded before then.

Max Scherzer said Friday that he’d like to rejoin the Blue Jays rotation without making another rehab start.

Scherzer threw a bullpen session Friday. He pitched five scoreless innings for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, but since that took him only 56 pitches, the thinking was that he’d make one more rehab start. If he’s activated, it would likely be to face the Nationals on Monday. Spencer Miles would be put back in middle relief, but that might be very temporary with the Blue Jays seemingly in line to sell at the deadline.
