Athletics optioned RHP Luis Morales to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Morales entered with the A’s down 3-1 in the eighth last night in the eventual 13-1 loss to the Tigers, so you can guess how that went. A nice surprise in nine starts as a rookie last year, he has a 14.06 ERA in two starts and three relief appearances in the majors this season.
BOS maintains grip on Wild Card spot after sweep
Jason Benetti, Lou Merloni and Hunter Pence break down how the Red Sox displayed their brand of baseball in their sweep against the Giants, who have to find a way to get "over the hump."

Morales had a 7.18 ERA in 52 2/3 innings with Las Vegas, including nine starts, where he allowed 10 home runs. He had some promise before the season, but considering how he’s pitched this year we’re not itching to get him active in any fantasy leagues.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
Morales heads back to the minors without making an appearance after being brought back by the Athletics earlier this week. The 23-year-old will return to pitching in shorter stints out of the bullpen in the minors. He has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage spots if he manages to harness his command.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
Morales has always been an intriguing arm, but he’s struggled to throw strikes in the majors this season. The hard-throwing 23-year-old will presumably operate in long relief for the Athletics after showing some promise in shorter bursts out of the bullpen at the Triple-A level recently. He can be ignored in all fantasy formats at this stage of his development.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
Morales has been knocked around in three appearances with the A’s this season, posting a miserable 14.46 ERA, 3.11 WHIP and a cringe-inducing 7/12 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings. He’ll attempt to work through his command issues at the minor league level.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
Morales finds himself back with the Athletics in a long relief capacity after a roughly one-month stint back in the minors where his control issues persisted. The 23-year-old pitching prospect was lit up for 10 runs on 13 hits with an abysmal 5/8 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings over two starts to open the season.

Morales will get another shot with the Athletics after coughing up 10 runs on 13 hits with an abysmal 5/8 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings over two starts to open the season. He’ll presumably be available to pitch in long relief after starter Jacob Lopez against the Guardians on Saturday afternoon. The 23-year-old is a talented pitching prospect, but the results simply haven’t been there for fantasy managers to trust him in any capacity.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
The Athletics have decided to jettison Morales to the minors for some additional seasoning after being torched for 10 runs on 13 hits with an abysmal 5/8 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings over two starts to open the season. The hard-throwing 23-year-old pitching prospect will get an opportunity to reset back at the Triple-A level. It’ll presumably be J.T. Ginn taking his spot in the rotation when it comes up on Friday against the Mets.

Morales surrendered two runs to the Astros in the opening frame on four hits and a walk. Two more runs would score in the third, including a solo homer by Christian Walker. Morales walked the leadoff batter in the fourth, and that would be it for the 23-year-old right-hander. He failed to record a strikeout and has allowed five runs in each of his first two starts. Morales lines up for a start against the Mets in New York on Friday.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #19
Morales couldn’t keep the ball in the park, as he allowed three homers to the Toronto lineup, including a solo homer by George Springer to lead off the game. He was able to get his fastball over 98 mph on several occasions and managed a decent nine swings-and-misses, but the command ruined any chance for a successful start. A chance to bounce back comes over the weekend versus the Astros.

Morales walked three of the first four batters he faced and then gave up a bases-loaded double to Lenyn Sosa, at which point he was lifted. He came back out for the second and retired six of seven through the third before being removed for good. Morales, who will face the Jays on Sunday, concludes the spring with a 7.58 ERA and a 17/14 K/BB in 19 innings. He was rather impressive for the A’s last season, but he doesn’t make sense as a starter in shallow leagues right away.

Yusei Kikuchi was tagged for five runs in five innings Sunday to take a loss to the Rangers in his return from the IL.

Kikuchi, who had been out since the end of April with shoulder inflammation, gave up eight runs in his last rehab start, so this was an improvement. Ezequiel Duran and Elias Díaz homered for two of the 11 hard-hit balls he gave up. Kikuchi is 0-4 with a 6.30 ERA this season. He’ll probably make his next start next Sunday against the Phillies.

Nick Sogard homered, doubled and walked Sunday as the Red Sox defeated the Giants 5-4.

The Red Sox need to free up three roster spots with Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa all due back this week, but Sogard, who has taken over as Boston’s starting second baseman, has to stick around. He has two homers, four doubles, five singles and six walks in his last six games, raising his OPS from .663 to .827.

Jake Bennett tossed seven innings and allowed four runs — three earned — in a win over the Giants on Sunday.

Bennett gave up two runs in a first and would have allowed more if not for an exceptional catch from Ceddanne Rafaela in center. He then allowed a Jonah Cox homer in the second. However, Bennett made things looks easy after that, with the lone remaining run scoring on a double error that gave Christian Koss a Little League homer. Bennett was pitching on nine days’ rest after back-to-back subpar outings against the A’s and Pirates. He’s over his career high in innings, so the Red Sox will try to tread carefully with him the rest of the way. It’s just not going to be easy with the team seemingly postseason bound and Payton Tolle in the same boat as Bennett.

Chapman has two saves in three days after going 19 days without one. The save today was the 396th of his career.

Matt Wilkinson lost to the Red Sox after allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings on Sunday.

He allowed seven hits, walked none and struck out two. Wilkinson threw 66 pitches on three days’ rest after his two-inning MLB debut on Wednesday. With Adrian Houser moving back to the rotation, it’s unclear if Wilkinson will get a start next time through. Sending him down for a fresh arm might be a possibility.

Jonah Cox went 2-for-4 and homered Sunday against the Red Sox.

Cox homered in his 10th big-league game back in June, but that was off Carson Kelly in 16-3 game against the Cubs. This one came off Jake Bennett in the second. Cox, who could be looking at more playing time if Victor Bericoto goes on the IL, is batting .255/.255/.489 through 50 plate appearances. He’s struck out 26 times, but he has a .526 BABIP, which seems totally sustainable.

Kyle Stowers is slated to come off the injured list prior to Monday’s game against the Red Sox.

This is a surprise, as there hadn’t really been any news on Stowers since he went on the IL with a hamstring strain on Aug. 11. Deyvison De Los Santos will return to Triple-A to make room for Stowers. Agustín Ramírez will likely lose some playing time.

Brian Serven went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer Sunday in the Athletics’ 7-6 win over the Astros.

Serven, who is backing up Jonah Heim with Shea Langeliers out for the season, has racked up a surprising four homers and 11 RBI in 15 games for the A’s. He had six homers and 20 RBI in 101 career games previously, with all of the homers coming at Coors Field during his time with the Rockies in 2022.

After taking over in the second, Jack Perkins yielded three runs — one earned — over five innings for a win against the Astros on Sunday.

Perkins took over down 3-0 after Brady Basso struggled in the first, but he ended up leaving with the A’s on top 7-6. He struck out six and walked five, though two of those were intentional passes to Yordan Alvarez. The win is his first since Apr. 18, when he got one in relief for finishing off an 11-inning game. He’d been 0-9 since. He’ll likely face the Orioles on Saturday, probably again as a bulk guy.

Hogan Harris struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 13th save Sunday against the Astros.

Harris fanned Jose Altuve and Christian Walker in the one-run game. He has four saves, two blown saves that turned into losses and one hold in his nine appearances this month.
