Louis Varland gave up a game-tying homer in the ninth. Cease has allowed four earned runs and struck out 56 in six starts since the beginning of July, and he’s nearly caught Cam Schlittler for the AL ERA lead (2.28 vs. 2.26). He’s first in the AL and second in the majors with his 184 strikeouts. His next start will come against the same Red Sox team he pitched a one-hitter against on two weeks ago.

Varland gave up a 108-mph single to Pete Crow-Armstrong to start the ninth and then a 100-mph fly to Seiya Suzuki that proved to be an out with the wind blowing in at Wrigley. With two outs, he gave up another 100-mph fly, but this one was hit a little lower and down into the left field corner for a 368-foot homer. Varland has allowed six runs — three earned — in his last three appearances. He’d allowed 11 runs — six earned — in 50 appearances previously.
